If you have ocd read this!...read this...read this...read this..lol

Hi everyone, this is my first post here, but I have been lurking for about a week. :D I have found this site VERY informative and I would like to give something back by sharing how to overcome OCD.

The first thing to understand is that IF YOU SUFFER FROM ANY FORM OF OCD, COGNITIVE THERAPY and BEHAVIORAL THERAPY, WILL ALMOST CERTAINLY NOT HELP YOU!!! What does work, is much trickier and subtler: NEURO-PLASTIC THERAPY. If you think I am bullshitting you, you have another think coming. ::p: Allow me to explain.

I have a ritual: Obsessive masturbation. From age 15 until I was almost 22 ( I am now 23 ), I would jerk-off once a week for 3 - 4 hours at a time. There would be binge periods where I did it several times a week or everyday, for easily five hours at a time. Finally, I would have occasional "freak out" episodes where I would masturbate for at least 7 hours. The worst such incident involved masturbating for 12 hours with my spit. ::(: Do you know what that does to you? Well I was painfully injured afterwards and "out of commission" for two weeks. I hope this demonstrates the severity of my problem. I will admit that I was not in therapy for this issue, however, cognitive and behavioral techniques are at a loss to solve OCD, or else why isn't your therapy working? Right.

I tried tackeling my anxieties over sex logically to no avail. I psycho-analyzed my behavior and figured out how the cycle worked. It still didn't help me. I tried quiting porn...Yea right. Then I noticed something. When I was 21 I masturbated in the shower for 10 days as a therapy to reduce my compulsion when viewing porn. Afterwards my time had fallen from 3.5 hours to 2.5 hours. It had worked. But why?! Five months later I read about "NEURO-PLASTIC THERAPY". The idea was that thinking about obsessions makes them more powerful because they are essentially "broken neural circuits" which you reinforce. The fear-feeling does not cut-off when it should in response to a specific "warning thought". If you IGNORE the warning thought UTTERLY AND TOTALLY, and AVOID THE COMPULSION UTTERLY, no matter how little you resist, the circuit will DIE. It must DIE. This is the fundamental rule of neurology: use it or lose it.

Was this true? Would this inane therapy really solve my problem???

It took me four horrible weeks of intense anxiety to get results. I would not allow myself to think about the horrible thoughts I had each time I masturbated: "Youre dirty. Youre degrading women. Youre a bastard. Youre a horrible person. Youre a sleaze. Youre encouraging rape. Etc." I would not allow myself to search for new pictures when I felt anxious, which was my ritual, I would force myself to stare at the same picture the whole time. It felt like I was getting nowhere until week three began and the thoughts spontaneously became less obsessive. By week four the thoughts were fairly mild and my time had fallen to 50 minutes. I was SHOCKED. 9 months ago I administered another neuro-plastic treatment. The results were I gained full control over my behavior and could stop whenever I wished. However, I was still very obsessive and if I allowed myself the opportunity I would spend about 45 minutes jacking off. I gave myself another therapy and got the time down to 35 minutes. I also no longer was an automaton. Some days were long and others short. I stopped ultra-obsessively searching porn.

7 months later, I still struggle with this OCD if I get very anxious and certainly my sessions have an obsessive quality, but the major issues are gone. This is proof positive that you can FIGHT A HORRIBLE COMPULSION and WIN! And the way to do it is not by cognitive and behavioral therapy rubbish, it's by KILLING the neural circuits that cause this complex. I hope my rediculous and humerous annecdote will provide others with the information and motivation they need to overcome their OCD.

Welcome to the forums, and thanks for the insightful post. I think I need something like this. :D So if I just forget about it, even if it takes a week and only wash my hands once then it will go away? Hmm, worth a try.

Hi IDK and thanks,

Yes it should work for you, but it may take several weeks or even longer and IT WILL BE EXCRUCIATING. However, if hand-washing is so horrible that it's worth the pain, then you should try this therapy and just remember that it takes time, and ANY RESISTENCE kills the circuit, no matter how small. JUST RESIST until you can't, and REPEAT.

Let me know how it goes. Maybe other people here will find the treatment effective too.
