The movie is about science advancing to the point of creating a humanoid robot fully controlled wirelessly by thought, where the user could see everything the robot does, and that every person would have one, which would essentially replace them for everyday activies, like work, and the user could just let themselves go and lay around all day, only using their thoughts to control their robot aka their surrogate.
I think this movie really relates to social anxiety. I loved the scene when Bruce Willis walks outside without his surrogate- all scared and vulnerable- flinching at every noise and person walking down the street.
