I almost always type in a false name if possible, when joining/doing sth on web. Also i never even give people a hint about my real name via my chosen user name.
So, ~never use/give your real name, only unless it's absolutely needed (eg online banking, geneology, etc). The more sites your real name (& other real details, eg home address) is on, the more chance that the "baddies" will get hold of those details, and do god-knows-what with them.
That's one area in life where my natural neurotism & paranoia is really useful
