Do I lack a fundamental understanding?

Well, I posted about this before but...when a girl says she likes you (unsolicited) does that automatically mean she wants to date you? I've asked this elsewhere and it always seems to be yes but...

I wonder if I missed a really great oppprtunity with this one girl, she's married now, but I'm wondering if I lack a fundamental understanding of the intentions behind the words. I always doubt it could be meant in the "good way." So, how do you tell?

Knowing if someone is interested in you often goes beyond words. People can say "I love you" but it doesn't necessarily mean in the romantic sense.

A lot of it comes down to being able to read and recognise subtle body language and unconscious signals.

For example, if you touch someone (in an innocent way) and they reciprocate or hold your gaze for a little longer than is necessary, it can mean that they are attracted to you. That said, some people are naturally affectionate with everyone. You just have to see how they are with other people as well.

It's always a difficult call to make, but you just have to sometimes trust your gut instincts about these things and follow your heart...but also be prepared to get it completely wrong!

I don't know...that particular situation was accompanied by some touching, etc. It's hard to tell if a naturally flirty person is into you. As far as touching, I always let the woman touch me first. The other way arond is just creepy.

And yes, I know about the non-verbal signals. Question is which one is really the tell-tale sign.
