counselling/CBT costs

So I might be giving counselling another shot.

I was wondering what is the average price that you guys have paid for an hour-long session with a psychologist/psychiatrist?

I used to go to this great psychologist who charged me 20 (Canadian) dollars an hour before, I assume that that's a pretty good deal, however she's on the other side of town now. So, I'm stuck looking for someone who's a little bit closer... Btw those of you from Toronto, if you can recommend anyone, please do.

Also what's a typical cost to attend a CBT group session (since I've never been)?

Thanks.

I live in US but I just started going to a psychologist that costs $95/session. He was nice enough to give me a discount to $50/session though because I have crappy insurance.

I haven't come across a psychologist that charged under $100, so it's great that you actually know of someone that charges $20. It might even be worth it to travel further if you find everyone else is too expensive.

I think a CBT group session is a great idea. I don't know of any in my area though. There is a group that meet at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health in downtown Toronto. It's free, probably because there aren't any therapists involved. Someone had also brought up the idea before about different people meeting somewhere in Toronto, but it didn't work out.. I think we were all in totally different places. But good luck, I hope you find something good.

Judging by the prices listed so far, you may be right, nimrodel...

It's a shame that the forum's Torontonians didn't manage to form a CBT group of their own. The SA group that meets in CAMH is actually a support group, kind of like the one we have here on the forum though, so it's not exactly what I'm looking for. But is probably still worth a shot.

If anyone on here who's from Toronto has ever gone then I would appreciate some feedback regarding the experience. How big does the group tend to be? What's the atmosphere like and whatnot?

Twenty bucks an hour!? Wow. The psychologists around here (interior British Columbia) charge, on average, $150.00 an hour. The cheapest one I went to charged thirty less than that.

As for groups, you're in TO!! There should be piles of them. I recently bit the bullet and went to a mixed anxiety group meeting. It's far, far from ideal, but it's something I suppose. The other anxiety disorders have nothing in common with SA (or should I say they have one major difference; viz., even if you are afraid of germs (OCD) or feel a pervasive sense of panic throughout the day (GAD), you can still use the phone, have friends, work, etc. Extreme SA leaves you paralysed as socializing is like food or shelter - an essential component of life, without which you live a stunted existence) and I hate it when they mash them together like that.
