Its just you hear about this problem as affecting the more developed countries. Stereotypically african people are portrayed as happy, lively always joking, dancing etc.

We have had a few members from third or second world countries. I'm guessing the problem of SA is there but internet access is somewhat limited for the poor, unlike the first world where pretty much everyone can get online. So we tend to hear from the more wealthy people. I get the feeling this will change in the next few decades and that more people globally will get online

African's are generally very positive people. The big difference is that they value their communities, whereas the West is geared more and more towards self and individuality. That said, I can guarantee you that there are African's on some form of medication for SA.

Well I'm not African myself, but I do live in South Africa and yes there are many black people here who suffer from depression and anxiety. They appear to be mostly from the current generation however and a lot of older people in general (black or otherwise) tend to be more happy and less stressed. High rates of poverty and unemployment being the main reason for this, plus the extremely high crime rate. Which makes the majority of the country rather stressed (no matter what race or age) and feeling rather uneasy. I would think that in the very poor African communities throughout the continent especially with places still in civil war and conflict that the amount of people with psychological problems must higher than we think.

I was from a third world country, and I developed SA here. Whenever I go back to visit though, I'm perfectly normal, if not upbeat and enthusiastic.

But maybe I can't blame my present circumstances, since it was more than likely the culture shock that started it all.
