As a quick-n-dirty fix, pick up some steel wool, pre-mixed drywall compound (commonly called 'mud', or even an autobody fibreglass filler), and a small little spreading-knife (trowel, comes in many different shapes and sizes).

Stuff the steel wool into the (apparently large) crack to fill the cavernous void, making sure that it's fairly level with the rest of the ceiling, then push the drywall compound up and around to completely seal the gaps and make it flush.

This certainly won't do anything to help your fear of drowning, but at least the invisible eyes won't be staring at you from the void any longer...

And that's $20 well spent, I'd say.
