Like many out there, When i was told i should go to therapy i shuttered at he idea. Cause hey who wants to go and pour out all your messed up thoughts to some douche bag just having you there for money right?

What i recomend is just researching and reading up on books on ocd, books on meditation and mindfulness, Acceptance and comitment therapy, Anxiety managemtent ETC.
Theres pleanty of self help books out there that are a great help and these will give you some great insight and things you can do to practice on beating O.C.D. Reading these books will give you the exact information a therapist will give you and you can dive into these things on your own(and save your self imense money in the process)

Go to your local library, with the internet these days you can pretty much find any book out there in your region and have it sent to your local library.. Oh technology, gotta love it  So it dosent really get any easier then that.

It always peeves me when i hear people say OCD's uncurable. This is false. Its just lifelong habits your brain has picked up that you've never had the knowledge of fixing and people often just accept it and think theres no changing it cause its there thoughts and thoughts just naturaly come to you so theres no fixing it- This too, Untrue

It isnt easy and for some it takes years and years. Some people never manage to get past it (but that dosent mean its not possible) Its all about re-teaching your brain, Meditation and mindfulness is great for this.

I realize this a pretty long post and that many of you wont bother to read through it haha, But it always blows me away of how many people have ocd and just except being miserable and dont research or practicefixing it. Cause if it effects your life so you should be putting a hugeeeeeeeeeeee effort into fixing it, many dont... some not at all.

Knowledge is the answer!!

Thoughts?? Anyone have anything to add, disagree with etc???

I suppose I agree. It takes time though. That would be one of the biggest arguments working against it. In todays world, going to school, working, those who try to hit the gym, many have kids, to sit down and read what one could pay a therapist to sum up for them, it takes time.
Personally, I'm willing to give it a try. It may take time, but it's the rest of your life you're talking about. I've also been to a counselor. Around here we don't have many therapists or shrinks. Anyway, she was no help. Just listened. Occassionally offered a suggestion. I think the anticipation of having to go see here each time made the OCD worse.

Yeah thats true, but usualy with OCD you know what the problem is for the most part. So alota these books offer advice of things you can practice whenever your ocd kicks in or offers you some insight to the issue that you might not have realized.

Some books that are of a great help are:

Brain lock : free yourself from obsessive-compulsive behavior : a four-step self-treatment method to change your brain chemistry.

The worry trap : how to free yourself from worry & anxiety using acceptance & commitment therapy

Luminous mind : meditation and mind fitness / Joel Levey and Michelle Levey.

Those are just a couple that come to mind that have helped me a great bunch. But i read alot about mediation and aniety and it all helps.

I even find that just flat out reading 2 hours a day does wonders for my mind. Cause in the words of buhda " Like any other body part, the brain must be kept exercised to stay sharp" Which is too true.

But the wory trap in particular focus on the new Acceptance and Comitment Therapy which is rather new but has been helping lots of patients greatly with ocd. I recomend you all to check it out

Cheers

Hey anytime :D
But you dont have to buy the books! simply just get a library card from your local library and u should be able to find any books from your region deliverd straight to your library by using the ole webernet. Gotta love technology!!

But acceptance and commitment therapy works wonders for OCD.

Basicly it explains that people are much bigger then there thoughts and that we can control them it just takes practice using certain methods. Many people just get thoughts and then react to them and in OCD it causes much panic. But everyone has messed up thoughts from time to time its just the anxiety that we allow to go along with it that is the issue.

It's hard to explain, but if you really want a philosphy to help and for some even cure OCD Acceptance and commitment therapy is something you dont wanna pass up. If you have ocd u cant afford not to get familiar with it. It works wonders my freinds 8) 8)
