Acknowledge your successes

In my new job which is going great in terms of work but not so much for other aspects involved me attending a two day function where I had to mingle with others.

Nervous I was but tbh, I can look back and say I took some positive steps.

I tried to smile more which helped to draw people to me and when I engaged in conversation with people I didn't know, I did OK. I tried not to throw in jokes but just said what came to my mind.

The second day was better as I struck up a conversation with two women - nothing personal - and had a laugh and I enjoyed it. It gave me great confidence boost and later there was a talk in a lecture theatre and I walked in (the entrance was at the top so I didn't have to walk in at the bottom of the theatre and have people look at me) and they saw me and beckoned me over so that helped massively.

It's helped me realise that I can use those two incidents to form good positive memories when meeting and talking to new people. I didn't acknowledge my success until I read a self help book, Gillian Butler's overcoming SA and shyness.

So, people if you do something good to overcome your SA, don't dismiss it because it is something that everyone does so easily and routine but celebrate it.

:)
