----In China, there's a idiom which often appears before jok, that is: Laugh Once,Yonger Ten Years

IRON BIRD (Translated by Gao Weiliang From Chinese)

In World WarII in china,a airman team bailouted and fell into a mountainous area. They were waiting for recourse

with helicopter, which should have been here at 6:00 and now it was 18:00.
A soldier saw a old lady of autochthon in a field. He walked over and asked:

SOLDIER: Hi,lady, have you seen a iron bird flying over the air?
AUTOCHTHON: Iron bird? No.
SOLDIER: No? I means a IRON BIRD which could fly. It's a very very big bird.
AUTOCHTHON: No.But I saw a helicopter flying over.

I think that these things are alot harder for people in more traditional societies. Even one generation ago people with mental problems were misunderstood and abused. I live in the United States where anything goes, and even here, many people from the older generation don't think about these things like younger people. They think that men should be strong and not show there feelings, like they are week if they show their feelings. If someone has a problem that you can't see then they don't understand it. My husband is from Guatemala and he doesn't understand what I go through at all. I think that in china that looking at someone impolitely is more bad than it is here? That could be why it is more of a problem for you.
My problems are not nearly as serious as yours, so can't totally understand your situation. I can that the less you think about it, the less nervous you will be and it wont happen as much. Thats how it is with me, but that is impossible sometimes.
Would it be possible to wear dark sunglasses when you are walking on the street? That way people wont see your eyes and get mad.

-----Your phone is free
By Gao Weiliang

One day a gammer took my cell phone calling someone.
"Hey,it's my cell phone"
"Yes?I know! But your phone is free?"
"Why?"
"My phone has a wire, through which they could trace me,and your cell phone has no wire, who know I rung."

Oh,my god!An old Chinese lady even can't understand Chinese Mandarin, now was so "smart"!

Welcome every body to embellish my You can not control it on purpose untill other affairs take the place of your mind. When it becomes illness,it becomes terrible devil.
It is some like obsession. The more you want to control yourself, the more you can't hold.
At first we may be sensitive to somebody's eye.Subsequently may to the opposite sex,to the same sex,to someone's body, even to other things such as tree, cup, anyhow every thing you touched.

Hi gaogwl,

You write: 'It is some obsession. The more you want to control yourself, the more you can't (hold)' and - 'At first we may be sensitive to somebody's eye'

...I think that this is accurate. What do you notice when your mind is not preoccupied with staring and offending people with your stares-?
...Do you notice that you do it less often and don't get people thinking you are strange-? Because I think that you started off very sensitive to little things and small gestures, emotions etc of people around you, and over time you have become even more hypervigilant (this means that you worry, to the point of obsessing, about not doing something that is socially unnacceptable).

I have read that in Asian culture, what is considered an acceptable time to stare at others is different from Western cultures. And also, people who struggle making 'correct' contact, specifically those who look away and whose eyes avoid meeting those of others, are interpreted as untrustworthy. THis is probably why people thought that you were a theif.

You've identified that the more you worry and focus on eye contact, the more trouble you experience with this and the more people react badly towards you and think you strange/untrustworthy.

So, firstly, you need to learn how to stop worrying so much about this.
Bur before you can change the underlying fears behind your trouble with making calm eye contact with others, you probably need to simply learn how to calm your self and stop worrying. I recommend learning meditation. This can help you to simply stop the cycle of worrying continuosly and obsessing -by just learning how to be calm when you want to, you can already in part achieve better eye contact.

Why do I say that -notice what you wrote: the more you try to stop doing the wrong thing, the more you do it. This is because you focus too much on it. Eye contact is easy when people do not focus on making it. You focus so much on it and on doing it properly that it becomes more and more uncomfortable and strained for you.

So you need to learn strategies in simply calming yourself. Meditation is one way of just making yourself calm when you want to and of letting go of repeated thoughts that become obsessive in nature because you cannot detach from them. ...In meditation, the strategy of 'stopping' thoughts is actually by letting them 'run through you' and simply focussing back on being calm and NOT THINKING.

In your state of anxiety, your thoughts are moving rapidly through your mind. BEfore you can deal with changing these thoughts, you need to just drop them. It is like you are trying to solve a puzzle but you are stuck doing the same thing. When you study for an exam, if you find your mind hits a brick wall, the smart thing to do is stop studying and go for a walk or do something completely different that doesn'y involve thinking.

Do this first.

THen after this, when your mind is calmer, you can look into what may be causing you to obsess over making eye contact.
I suspect that you are highly sensitive to small details of others behaviour and are more easily prone to becoming preoccupied with details and to losing your sense of perspective and calm.
The catch-22 of being attentive to details is that the great focus that this goes with, also brings with it problems with having perspective and seeing past these small details.

I also think that on top of this high sensitivity to and focus on details, because you then lose your perspective more easily as a result of this, on top of this is a sense of shame. This is part of the dis-ease in making eye contact. You believe your self to be odd because you have some discomfort making eye contact and in turn this makes you even more uncomfortable making eye contact and makes you feel more ashamed... and you're stuck in a loop.

So for now, find ways to simply calm your emotions and slow down your thoughts. When you have successfully done this and feel calm, you'll find that you experience your trouble less. Then you can look into what thoughts are behind your fear of making eye contact (really it is of making a mistake with your eye contact) and address them. For now, cut the cycle of worrying. Think like this: If you were studying for an exam but could not understand a maths equation; you'd stop trying to understand it and give your mind a break. Let it relax by doing something that doesn't involve thinking (like meditation) and when you go back to trying to understand the equation, your mind will be calm and will find it much easier to solve.

Thanks for your reply.
Actually speaking,it's not just about eye contact,or about the asia culture as you say. Most people in China or other asia countries can focus others' eyes calmly and amicably. It was caused by some casual affair about the girl i loved in my high school, which i do not want to speak out...
I'm the man, smart, conceit, but no good chance to step up.The relation around me is so bad!
Every thing is not like what you thought.I'v tried to tell myself to open my hart widely,to look what you want to look and do what you want to do without any warries. But i failed.
And i heard some "eye phobias" in China said that even the doctor can't help them. It's hard to me,brutal to me,but i'll never give up my life.I learn the Internet Technique and now I'm building my new website with english version. It'll be finished in 6 six months.I think my future will be bright.
Thanks for your reply again.

A Chinese Boy's Story about Social Phobias of Eye Fear (5)

Welcome every body to embellish my article .Transshipment of these words to other web pages is allowed if original intention or purpose not be wholly changed.
A Chinese Boy's Story about Social Phobias of Eye Fear (5)
Gao Weiliang
Here I'm posting these words with a purpose that to gather the eye phobias (eye fear) from the world toghter on web .I'm studying hard the technique of network to build a forum which called THE HOME OF EYE PHOBIAS.At present I'm not able to build that, but I think the day I'm successful will come sooner or later.Of course it needs me to be skilled at the Data Base and Programme ASP .
Also I've had a ambition to gather the eye phobias (eye fear)from the world toghter in our real lives. We may build a realorganization of the eye phobias. We're going to living together,we understand each other,we forgive every person that look with an odd eye.We understand,we understand. We're going to be united to oppose any prejudice against us.But ,It needs money.
I have one aim that is to make friends.I have no friends,I'm lonely. Also we can live harmoniously. Maybe some of us that has no object of courtship could find his or her another part in our organization. If it is conditional , you could come to China to live with us,or when we are richer,we could go to your country(Hah,does it seem I'm an idealist. But I think it is better than no idea).
And the prerequisite is: our symptom should be very very serious that it seriously effects our normal lives, or else we'll be mutually reminded to care about (or to remember)the eye phobias. You know,a normal person will also suffer from the eye phobias if he/she stay with us for a period of time.It is like the physiology illness. We could call it mental cross infection.
Thereafter I'll collect some Chinese articles about eye phobias from Chinese web pages ,and translate them into English.
[To be continued, forgive my poor English.Contact me if you were similar to me--Email: [email protected] MSN: [email protected] MSN Spaces: http://spaces.msn.com/oddlight/ ICQ:169096437]

Dear Gaogwl,

I love reading your posts you have a nice heart.
I hope you will overcome your challenges.

I am from Europe and i am a Muslim.
In the holy Qur'an it says: Seek knowledge even as far as China.

Thank you for offering me that opportunity. :D

Hello everybody in here reading this:

The reason why i am here is because i'm doing job interviews at this moment. And i get rejected because of lack of eye-contact. I just don't feel confortable in situations beeing judged on my looks and presentation. I don't feel very secure allthough i'm working on it for example by replacing my glasses for contaclenses. And a visit to the dentist wouldn't hurt also ( i hope).

But what i suspect is that the reason for feeling not secure goes deeper. When i look back at my past there where times i felt really rejeceted.
I suppose i have to deal with these feelings first.

We are expecting talking and smile, but at most time, the eye phobias are passive.

We are unbelieving, and are suspected when there's contradiction.

So called "Eyes are the windows of our heart", but what they know! Our eyes are the evil of our heart! They know nothing.

There's more than 2 police to ask me for my ID cards, and I heard other saying for my Social phobias. But in fact, I'm the honest boy.

Exact same problem as you

hi. i have exactly the same problem as you and this is the route of all my depression and problems in life. i don't know how this came to be, but one day in my early teenage years I became acutely aware of where I was looking and what movements my eyes were making. I guess it's now become and obsessive type thinking pattern and I just can't stop thinking this way. It's driving me nuts it really is and I don't know how to rid myself of this problem - any tips?
