if it weren't for my family...

I think I would've shot myself a long time ago! I depend on them the most. I have 3 other sisters and they drive me everywhere. I just don't want to depend on them any longer...I'm 21 and I feel like a kid! I can't even take a walk by myself. well idk if that has to do with my neighborhood not being safe:/

Does anyone drive by themselves? I'd really like to get my license but I don't think i would be able to drive alone...

How do you cope driving to doctors appointments/ work/ school??

I can relate. except I drive but I used to never go anywhere alone (due to S.A. not agrophobia) but I was slowly forced to do more stuff alone like go to the doctor, store, etc... since I had no one home to go with. and its been getting easier and easier to do stuff alone now

this is the agrophobia section of the site.

Hello 0dd1. Sounds like you have a very common anxiety which is known as "driving anxiety". Your best bet is to see a psychiatrist and get a psychiatric evaluation from there he/she will be able to get you on a medicine that is best suited for your situation. From there he will probably recommend you to a psychologist to work with. Its all about sticking with it and taking steps.

hm, it depends how severe it is. I had driving anxiety too, and wrote down all my fears and worries and did CBT and EFT/TAT on them (and some prayer lol), it was helpful..

I don't think you need meds for this, CBT would probably be more helpful.. it depends on the individual and how severe it is, maybe..

Only got my driving license when I was much older than you, Odd1, our neighbour got it in her 50s!! So, no frets..
I still prefer driving with family members (to point out things like traffic signs or where to turn etc.) alternatively, getting a cheapo car (and not fretting if you scratch it) may be a good approach too..

Car-sharing or using public transport is more environmentally friendly anyway!!
(It's just good to have a driving licence 'just in case'!!)

I am currently living with my parents in a rural area and depend on them alot to take me anywhere I need to go as well, but they can't always cater to me, so every so often, I muster up the courage to walk/bike into town, which is a bit of a trip and weather-dependent, so I understand how stuck you feel.

The embarrassing part of this is that I do have a vehicle, but it sits because I don't have a license or a permit at this point and haven't tried to get one since my last very bad driving exam experience almost five years ago. Relationship/college/money issues also got in the way, so my car's just been shoved to the backburner for all this time. I also have horrific eyesight without (heavy) glasses and have always been very anxious about driving, so I don't know what I will do in my situation yet.

I always figured I would move to a more populated city and use public transportation, but when I would practice driving with my mom, I did love the spontaneity and freedom of it all. If you do decide to give it a go, I wish you all the best!
