pls do read!!!

I,like many SAers have been misleading myself... always been thinking u have to be skinny, I don't know funny, really smart and s***, and u always look at other people and compare.. that's the misleading part.. u must have something of r own... that's why cbt is very needed. don't think I'm feeling alright that I've come to this conclusion, I'm feeling rather terrified... but they're has gotta be something u can do, something that is u... for example when I was little I was very fast, very talented for basketball and tennis, but my parents never took me to any trainings so that is their fault for my unused talent, cause it is kinda of late now... but I have found a talent for playing volleyball... and I'm actually very good.. now I plan on taking an instrument... recommend one.. I had the guitar in mind.. I use to be funny, hope that when I get other characteristics on board, that it won't be crucial for me to be funny, so that then I'll be free and it'll just come...I was always focusing on the fact that I can't dance, write, paint and s***. but I gotta have something of mine... It;s just human... now my question is: how many of u have r own talents and don't wish for others and still have the SA?

I always wanted to be a photographer, and I'm now finding I'm pretty good. I've had pictures published and have even sold a couple. And having a big camera to hide behind is good when I'm feeling a little self concious ;D

I'm also trying a creative writing course, as I used to love writing stories but stopped cos I was worried people would read them and think they were rubbish.

Still have SA and I have good days and bad days. Today is feeling like a good day :)

I was reading this book Now Discover Your Strengths and it was talking about how focusing on your weaknesses will never lead you being extraodinary, focusing on fixing weaknesses is only damage control- but if you focus on encouraging and developing your strengths, you will be successful.
(and it also talks about how we take our talents for granted because they come to us so easy that we think everybody can do/thinks like that or it's nothing special)

i've always felt that i wasn't good at anything.... i was ok at school, but recently i took out an old paper from high school (it was a paper everyone in the school was required to write or they would fail english- so lotta pressure)
i got a near perfect score on it (a lot of people failed it) and i just cried because i never felt like it was any good, but i could have done a lot more, i did possibly have a talent, but i let my self esteem put me down. now i feel totally incapable of writing- i think everything i write is absolutely stupid, and it's extremly painful for me read any papers i've written.

i think i've always had the mentality that if im not the best at something, i must be the worst at it (even though just because there are people that are better than you, that doesn't diminish the work you've done, and it doesn't mean that your input is invalid.)

i've never felt like i was good at anything, and that thought right there has prevented from developing any talents, so i never feel that i have any talents- and i think that's probably true for a lot of people with sa..

I know this feeling, whenever I've done something I always used to feel bad because it wasn't perfect.

I think it partly comes from school, every school report said "could do better" I was really gutted sometimes cos even if I'd tried hard I'd still get that same comment. In the end I just stopped trying and still find it really difficult to get motivated to do things. If I don't do it, I can't fail, so leave feeling like I could do it if I really wanted to...

we take our talents because they come so easy.. exactly... and everything else.. just EXACTLY!!!!

I think it's great that you've found a talent for volleyball, because I assume that to figure that out, you had to play volleyball with others and face anxiety like "what will they think if I don't do well?" Guitar would be a good instrument to take up, too. Not many girls actively play guitar and I think it's more versatile - you can easily blend into any music genre when you play guitar.

I can draw, and I'm a good writer, but not in the cool sense. I'm a good writer in the boring sense cause I can write informative essays really well, lol. I won a $100 bond, a trophy, and a few other things a couple of years ago when I got 1st place in the annual essay contest for my college..and I won it for the sophomore level when I was a freshman. That made me proud, but also really anxious because in order to have my essay submitted into the contest, I had to do a formal presentation in front of my class and then they had to vote on it. Then when I won, I had to read it aloud. I stuttered my way through both my presentation and my reading.

now I plan on taking an instrument... recommend one.. I had the guitar in mind.

having played guitar for over 20 years, i can say, its an easy instrument to play. anyone can play simply, but very difficult to master. plus, there are millions of guitar players out there, but very few who stand out. it's also a front instrument and with SA, it may not be where you want to be (i could be wrong though). try sitting behind a drum set and see where it takes you. bass is also a very easy instrument to play, and not as sophisticated as guitar.

thx for the post, but I wasn't planning on playing professionaly.. just so I can say I can do something... lol but I don't know if I can find a bass teacher... I'll give it a try! :D

i've never taken a lesson in my life. i picked it up one day in a bout of depression. it's easy to play a few chords, but beyond that, it can get very frustrating. most people who pick up guitar, get frustrated easily and give up, feeling defeated.

go to a music store and pick up the instruments and see where you feel comfortable the most. if you want to play, lessons really wont be necessary. playing an instrument comes from within, not someone teaching how to play. some of the best musicians out there are self taught.
