Yeahs its probably a combination of all.
Few (well hopefully a lot) may have improved their conditions because of Meds/Docs or even maybe because they have found people/friends in real life who they are comfortable with.
Others may have fallen into even deeper troubles and can't afford to get on the net or unable to get on the net.
But my guess is most of them have moved on to other forums... either based on their interests or other SP or SP related forums.
As for people who put bye/x/deleted. They probably are embarrassed about people finding out about their condition, their thoughts and stuff that they admitted to here. Lots of people put lots of personal and private things here. And some on these things are probably things that seem weird or unusual for non-SP people. So people are embraced about these things.
I sometimes wish it was like the old newsgroups (Usenet/NNTP) where all the usenet servers connects to one global newsgroup. Newsgroups don't seem to be that popular anymore. Its a shame in a way, as all these forums popping up everywhere seem to fracture the community. Which is really a shame for people like me who want to find others with SP who are local.
I suppose at least these forums are moderated to some extent and you can delete your posts.
Edit: Do you think any of them are dead? Like one guy who posted about topping himself a month or so back?
