Do doctors know how to treat shyness? Do doctors know how to treat -uber-shyness (Social phobia)? Noone know what is "Social Phobia". But, since it can cause other mental issues , they gave us medicines to treat that other issues they that could recognize. Basically, it is disappoiting because cant treat the main problem , only the consequences.

I have read some post here that shyness in males is illness. Even some doc published a book on that subject. Basic key to all illnesses is accpetance, but we are give a label of 'illness' . How would that solve a prbolem? I became more introspective (more "SP")after only few visits to doctors and i really dont know how would i get some prescription in the futire if i need. I m not even sure should i try cbt or self help on my own.

if your SA is caused by stuff that has happened in the past, traumatic events and stuff, then yeah i can see that meds isnt really gona change that. counselling would probably be more effective, maybe combined with meds though, who knows.
for me meds really did work tho..my SA wasnt really caused by any major traumas in my past..it just happened, i think it was a lot more to do with genetics in my case where the anxiety is caused by chemical imbalance in the brain.in these cases going on meds like SSRIs really can work, at least for me it did.

yes i have had major traumas in past..i mad a post about it("my life")and it's still goes on because i am stuck in this place. i dont think counseling is going to help either. this thing has seeped into my subconscious now. i am having recurrent dreams where i see people laughing at me, beating the shit out of me..its horrible.

The past cannot be changed. The way you relate to the past can change. Medication can stop you giving a shit about what happened in the past and let you see the future in a new light. I know this because its starting to work for me - its by no means a cure but it 1000% beats wallowing in pity and depression over things that are beyond our control in the first place.

It's true that medicine can't CURE ur social anxiety, but it provides ppl with SA to have a walking stick to assist them to start walking again. Well, if that particular person does not change himself, he will be forever doomed with the walking stick. Just some people have a high reliance on drugs to get through their live :(

I beg to differ. I felt the same way you did until I started taking Paxil. True the world is still going to treat us the same way but after taking Paxil my perception of the world has changed. I no longer fear what people or the world think about me. I just simply say what is on my mind. :)

I'm way more social on my meds,I surprise myself. It's like I'm just too numb to care what people think.
