To clarify something that's often confusing:
- A psychiatrist is a medical doctor (M.D.) specializing in mental health. They can prescribe medication, and some practice therapy.
- A psychologist holds a doctorate (Ph.D.) in psychology. In a few countries they can prescribe medication, but generally cannot. They usually practice therapy.
- A therapist or counselor may have a variety of degrees, commonly a Master's in Psychology or Social Work, and commonly holds the title LCSW or "Licensed Clinical Social Worker".
There is no general rule about any of these being "better". Just different.
What is quite common is for a person to see a therapist or psychologist, who then consults with a psychiatrist to prescribe medication. You may see the psychiatrist for as little as a few minutes every few months in this arrangement, while seeing a therapist most of the time.
As Helyna said, if you have a regular doctor already, it may be easiest to ask them to refer you to a psychiatrist.
