Under Arm Hyperhidrosis

Hello All,

I am finally getting fed up with my under arm sweating. It tends to be completely random. I am sitting here right now and have a drop rolling down my arm. Some days, although few, I don't sweat at all. The activities are the same and the sweat is consistent but sometimes random. My hands sweat a lot and so do my feet, but my feet not as much. It can be winter and I'm outside freezing but I still sweat like I'm working out. When just sitting on the couch playing video games I'll completely drench the arm pit areas of my shirt. While drumming it gets difficult to hold onto the sticks because of sweat. I'm a beginner at drumming too so I'm not doing anything too difficult or demanding. Fortunately I tend to not get BO. If I start to stink I change my shirt and the stink usually sticks with the shirt so I'm ok afterwards. I always try to have an extra shirt handy and usually wear hoodies or other clothing to help hide the problem.

Years ago I said something to my doctor and he sort of passed it off, asked me if I workout and other stuff but never gave me a solution or any kind of treatment. I recently bought Gilette clinical strength but have only been applying it in the morning after a shower. Today I will start putting it on right before bed to see if that helps. Otherwise I have an appointment with my doc on the 19th and will get his advice. He'll probably just refer me to a derm.

Anyone have success with any treatments for similar sweat problems? I read about Botox injections and that they work but are costly and painful. I also heard about an oral pill but don't know much about it.

Hey man, you've come to the right place.

Hyperhidrosis is the domain of the neurologist, as it is a problem with the nerves.

See the top link in the main forum for some treatment options. I'm still waiting on some Odaban that I've ordered online, as I've heard it's quite good, so I guess I shall see.

The most important thing is to not let it control your life. Your condition sounds really quite similar to mine (apart from the hands and feet, I sweat very little there).

One thing I've found that seems to stop me from sweating is my new girlfriend. It's strange - whenever I'm with her, I don't seem to sweat...strange.

So, maybe get a girlfriend?

LOL. I'll one-up you, I'm engaged to be married in June. Unfortunately she hasn't solved my problem but she's fine with it. I haven't said I have hiperhidrosis, I just tell her I sweat a lot and she doesn't seem to mind. I try not to let it control my life. I feel like a ninja going through every day life trying to hide it.

I did put the Gillette on last night before bed but I still feel a little soggy, no huge armpit spots though. I took a shower this morning and reapplied like the instructions say I can do but I'm curious if it would work even better if I shower at night and then put the Gillette on before bed. One mostly dry morning is no triumphant success by any means. I'll have to see how it goes for a while.

Odaban? Don't know what that is, I'll have to check it out under that link you mentioned.

Thanks!

That was amusing :p

HH is not the domain of the neurologist. Sweat glands sort under endochrinology. If you want to treat symptoms, you may talk to a neurologist, a dermatologist or a pharmacist, or even a beauty parlor I hear these days can inject you with some botox to clear out the rest of your bank account. These people know nothing about excessive sweat, but they will be happy to help you part with some money.

I believe if you want to look for a potential cure, you should talk to an endochrinologist, to perhaps get a real diagnosis. Or maybe ask your doctor to help you out with a blood sugar analysis. Then you might talk to a dietitian to re-structure your intake of food.

@ Hyper-Hydro:

You are right regarding the neurologists role in the treatment of HH. In my experience, I saw my GP, was referred to a neurologist, who then referred me to another neurologist, or said that I could have the surgery (yes, THAT surgery) done by a surgeon. After a while, I pretty much got the feeling that either none of the 'specialists' really knew what they were talking about, or that there was not much that could be done and that no-one was telling me that, for fear I'd take my cash elsewhere. I think, in retrospect, it was a bit of both.

@ USA123:

Congratulations or commiserations on the engagement? If I might be so bold, how do you find the HH problem when you are being intimate with your fiancee? It was a huge concern of mine that I would never be able to be intimate with a girl because of the HH (sweaty armpits can only be so sexy, you understand), but for some reason it seems to turn off when I get 'turned on' enough. Strange. (Feel free, of course, to ignore the abov question).

Thanks for putting the question to me. I used to feel shitty as hell about it. Some girls would comment on my hands feeling "clammy" Out of fear that girls would notice how moist my feet could get, I would be keeping my socks on in bed, and before I threw cotton out of my life, naturally my feet would stink terribly. Luckily the right girls didn´t even seem to notice my problem, which proves that the worst effect of HH is the mental part of it. My excessive sweat is primarily plantar and secondarily palmar, so luckily today l have my symptoms under control with iontophoresis, but I certainly wouldn´t mind being able to put that contraption away on my loft forever.

As for the being intimate, I don't even worry about having sweaty armpits. I take my shirt off and there go the armpit stains. I don't find that sweating effects intimacy after that and if I do sweat, its not like sweat is completely unexpected. I wear a lot of zip hoodies so my armpit stains aren't usually visible immediately anyway. I think in most cases the girl's mind is elsewhere when I'm taking off my shirt so they pay little attention to the armpit stains and pass it off even if they do see it.

The thing that effects my intimacy the most is my sweaty hands. Like someone else mentioned on the site, girls like to hold hands so I avoid it sometimes because my hands are sweaty but there are other ways to cuddle and get close.

If you invest in a iontophoresis device, and don´t mind taking the time and effort, your palms and feet can stay dry. I know that for sure, because it happened to me. Read my threads on making the best of iontophoresis, and also my thread "Digging In the Dirt" if you want to know which device will give you the best deal for your money.

Some of the manufacturers also make accessories for treating underarm sweat, but I´ve never heard any success stories regarding that. It seems that the limb needs to be immersed in water for the process to be effective.

* Digging in the Dirt hasn´t been updated for the better part of 2 years, so if anyone thinks it needs mending please message me.

If you have excessive underarm sweating, ask your doctor about Hypercare. My doctor prescribed it to me after I told him I sweat for no reason sometimes. All you do is apply it under your arms before you go to bed, wake up, and wash it off (don't use deod). It really works! Whenever I use it, I don't sweat at all the next day.

Do you know what is the percentage of Aluminium Chlorhydrate in this compound? (Sometimes percentages of active ingredients are stated on the labels of prescription medicine.)

Now I have 2 questions for you. I just got prescribed this yesturday. My first question is why do you wash it off when you wake up? My second question is if you can't use deodorant than how do you prevent B/O. Because isn't the Hypercare just an antiperspirant?

As Hyper-Hydro said, stay clear from botox injections for now since it can be really expensive and painful.

Maybe your excessive sweat has something to do with you hitting the puberty (hormonal activity) and will hopefully stop as you get older (out of puberty).

In the mean time try having a well balanced nutritional diet, drink plenty of water and exercise. This stuff won't cost you a thing but can mean a big difference.
