Unconscious Coping Stategies

Everyone has a personal THRESHOLD for what they can deal with in terms of stress.

Some people have a fairly high threshold (those who had good mentoring, positive early life experiences etc)

Some people, many of them on this forum evidently, have fairly low thresholds. They are easily affected by the goings on in their environment like what others are doing and saying etc.

I used to have a VERY low threshold. So low that I could barely leave the house without feeling anxious and stressed.

There are THREE "coping strategies" that people employ unknowingly to deal with the discomfort of being at or over their threshold:-

1) DISSIPATION - This method involves dissipating the energy outside of us. We might become over-talkative, fidgety, have to excercise compulsively or get angry and start hitting pillows.

2) BLOCKING - This involves blocking more energy entering our system. We might withdraw and isolate ourselves, avoid eye contact with people, dissociate (space out), become depressed or even become ill. This was the main one I used a lot.

3) DISTRACTION - This tends to be used in combination with the other two and involves things like TV, computer games, internet, reading, music drugs, alcohol and comfort eating.

Which ones do you notice yourselves using and can you think of any more examples?

Be well guys
