too anxious to speak another language?

So, i believe my english is understandable , even knowing that it's far from perfect. But i think i'm able to at least keep a simple conversation.

The fact is whenever i have the oportunity to speak with someone in english , it's like something keeps me from talking, probably my anxiety

I'm mostly self taught i learned to read, write and understand through (too much) movies and sitcoms/series and using the internet (forums, irc, even online games). Because of it, i probably have a huge accent which makes me even more afraid of trying.

If you are still not comfortable, then give it some time. Maybe when your heart is into it? (not when your heart leaps out of it)?

I still dread speaking spanish. I can and will if I must, but I still don't "like" to.

Being able to speak another language is a wonderful thing. You should feel proud of yourself for even trying to. Having an accent is quite a cool thing. Someone speaking English with a hint of Spanish, French or whatever actually sounds quite good. In some cases, it's very attractive! There was a French girl at my old college who I used to love talking to...she had an incredible accent and, yes, I will admit, I had a huge crush on her at the time. I think her voice had a lot to do with it!

What do you normally speak? You write excellent English.

I've written about this before - I am terrified of speaking French. I can, sometimes, but I avoid it as much as possible.

Yep in a face to face interaction I feel afraid to say something wrong or stupid, sometimes I am so worried that I mix up words with other languages I know and end up looking dumb as hell.

I was searching the internet and find out about "foreign language anxiety" if you google search for the term you'll find a lot more.

The problem to me is that i normally can think in english, i believe the key for truly learning a new language is being able to think in that language, but when someone speaks to me i simplily can't formulate a logical answer because my mind is full of negative thoughts.

maybe it's just a matter of overcoming my SA a little more then i'll be able to speak without "impairments".

thanks, my mother language Portuguese. I also try to avoid someone who might try to speak in english with me, but it's easy because it's not common to me, only a couple of people tryied, mostly teachers.

Man that must be terrible! i understand that you live in japan and came from brasil, right?
I would be totally screwed if i find myself in another country being forced to speak another language , maybe it would be good because it's a situation where "or you do or you do" :p

I always wanted to learn some japanese :)[/url]

Actually where I live its full of brazilians, and lots of Peruvians and Bolivians, you can live with just Portuguese or Spanish here, so I became kinda lazy and am not studying Japanese like I have to,I only know passable Japanese.
