To All Social Phobics: Please Read (The Cure)...

My Social Anxiety = cured.

As a former social anxiety sufferer & member of this forum... I believe that I should enlighten you all on how I recently cured my social anxiety. I've been a member of this forum for several months and asked for some help last January - when I was at rock bottom.

I used to suffer from social anxiety & depression, and let me start off by saying that I'd researched the disorder for years, taken medication for months, been to countless psychiatrists and doctors... and even after all of that, I used to think that my mind was just too powerful to ever tap into; that nobody would ever understand me; and that I was going to live in misery forever.

A few months ago, I was skimming through a social anxiety forum (like I always did on my lonely Saturday nights), and saw that someone had recommended the book: Self-Coaching: The Powerful Program To Beat Anxiety & Depression. I briefly read the name of it and was naturally skeptic at first - it sounded very gimmicky. Regardless, I decided to get some info. on it by looking it up on Amazon.com.

When I read the preface of the general idea in the description, that "our thoughts and interpretations of events determined our moods and feelings," it was almost like having an epiphany. Those words were so true to me, because it was something that I had become aware of and had been thinking about before. The only problem was, I always believed that I would never be able to "break the cycle" and change, because I didn't know what to do.

In a nutshell, the author of the book I just mentioned - Dr. Luciani - is not only aware of it, but he masterfully explains the concept to you, and then tells you how to eliminate (by starving) the "negative reflexive thoughts (the root of social anxiety)" with something called Self-talk. It takes discipline and motivation, but Luciani places emphasis on these aspects of healing, because he knows that anxiety/depressed-prone people can easily be susceptible to it if they aren't consistent. After a while, the "directed positive thoughts" will become automatic and replace the negative ones, ultimately influencing your oulook on life, how you feel, and how you affect other people.

Depressed people dwell on thoughts of the past, while anxious ones (social phobics included) have their minds clogged with thoughts anticipating the future. The goal is to live a "reactive life" - a life that's in the moment, where there are no insecurity-driven thoughts clogging your mind and distorting your perception of life. It might seem like a complicated concept to grasp, but I promise you that it'll make so much sense after you experience it first-handedly.

In my humble opinion, this is the single most amazing book I've ever read, bar none. It's so simple, but so unexplainably powerful if you follow it. I am dead serious when I say that the world would be a much more peaceful place if everyone on earth read it. I would give everything I own to the author for the happiness that I've acquired after reading this book. My social anxiety is cured.

Just my sentiments. The book again, is called Self-Coaching: The Powerful Program To Beat Anxiety And Depression, and you can buy it any where books are sold. The author (Dr. Joseph Luciani) has his own forum you can goto (self-coaching.net/forums) where he answers your own personal questions, and is on every day. He's probably the most compassionate psychologist I've ever seen.

The book has completely altered the way I look at life. I feel like I'm high on my endorphins.

Good luck!

Chris

That´s interesting, and it´s nice that you take the effort to read books because it is a great help and sometimes they say so much.
Let me know how are you doing and I wonder if your improvement lasts in the future.

I knew that someone was going to say that. I swear to you that I am in no way affiliated with the book or the author. I have asked for guidance in the past on this forum when I was at rock bottom. Just because you're a member of this forum does not mean that you have to live with social anxiety forever. Like the author says, "anxiety and depression are not life sentences." I was a member because I was once caught in the storm at one point too, and I just felt it an obligation to make this thread because i know exactly how debilitating it can be, and I have lots of compassion for people with it. If you don't want to take my word for it, you don't have to. I'm just sharing with you what has worked for me.

I think you should listen to one of Dr. Luciani's speeches: http://www.self-coaching.net/events/speeches/92sty1.php and decide whether or not you want to buy the book. I guarantee you it will seem like he's reading you. That speech is actually what made me go and buy the book, because I could relate to everything he was saying and I knew he knew what he was talking about.

All you have to remember is that anxiety and depression are both habits of insecurity, and like smoking, if you starve the habit, it can be broken. The worst thing you can do is feel victimized by it and think that you'll never be able to change.

Watch the speech and tell me what you think.

i suspect the same
it's very rare that any book changes someone so quickly. i've read tens of books and usually i get a short period of "high", i'm all like "this is it" but after a while it turns out i still am where i started

i won't buy the book but i would like to hear from other people who have read it. if someone else has the same experience than maybe it's worthwhile.
otherwise either it just works for you or it's load of bs

Watch the speech above and check out some of the comments left on Amazon.com. It's for anxiety and depression, but social anxiety is just anxiety projected into social situations. The book basically works at the root of all anxiety disorders. Personally, I find it very odd how not many people know about the book, because to me, it was a true marvel.

Yes I did read something like that in the book I'm Ok, you're ok (a very famous one in USA I think) and I did try hard the idea with good results (meaning i could stay positive for around 2 years). But at last I ended up with the same old bad feelings/thoughs cause... how can i stay positive after two years and nothing has changed, no positive things have happened to me, no improvement in myself, no such "positive" prospectives for the future...

that's my point. sometimes books may make you feel positive and even change your outlook on life in the long run, but if they don't change your habits, don't enable you to find a social circle to be a part of and find real friendship or whatever you're looking for nothing really will change.
about a year ago i felt i was really happy and thought i was getting out of my shell. but it was just an illusion cause i read too many self-help books. they gave me a feeling that i am very confident, but i still had trouble chatting with peple and didn't have many friends. i had always had very few and the situation was the same.

@creznor
i heard the speeches and they're not different from other "cure your anxiety" programs. i didn't hear anything there that i hadn't heard before. i mean it can help with your anxiety like all other programs but curing sa is much more - it's about learning social skills and ability to cope with interacting with strangers, large groups of people etc.

i think the site http://www.succeedsocially.com/index.html is the best source of info on how to cope with your sa
