I've come to understand something that is at the heart of life, and the way we operate socially, as well as our decision making in general. And that is the subconscious belief that we hold about ourselves. If it is positive, we draw in positive things. If it's negative we draw in negative things.
That's a simple formula for life, but it's actually a very deep concept that should require deep thought and understanding of it. Let me explain as best as I can.
I have heard of a concept in the past about "the law of attraction." This is a concept similar to what I am talking about.
Let me draw parallels to the Christian religion and what Jesus taught about faith. Jesus taught us that faith moves mountains, and that all things can be brought about through faith. He told Peter that if he had enough faith he could walk on water. Faith (a positive and powerful belief that you can do things you thought you couldn't) is a magnet for the force of good things. If someone has faith, they are magnetic to all things good. This is why Jesus spoke so much about it.
On the opposite side of the spectrum, there is fear. Fear is like faith, but in the negative sense. Instead of being a magnetic force to all things good, it repels good and becomes a magnet for bad things. When peter started to fear and doubt that he couldn't stay on the water, he started to sink. His faith was overtaken by the opposite force of fear, which produces negative results.
Jesus taught that a strong and powerful faith in God will draw in the power and wonder of God into your life. The magnetic power of faith will allow you to be a partaker in the influence of all thing good, which God is the author of.
Social anxiety is a manifestation of the fear magnet. The reason we believe that people are reacting negatively to us, is because we are attracting this to us by the deep fear and negative belief inside of us. Faith (the power of positive belief) is completely absent in our social life. The sub-conscious expectation of negative actions is solidifying this fear and making it stronger. Again, fear is a magnetic force which will always draw in negative things.
Faith must overtake this fear if we are to overcome social anxiety. How do we get it though? The thing about faith is that it feels risky and may seem like a vulnerable place. You don't believe it because you are so use to applying the strength of your fear muscle, which has time and again made you believe that life is just this way... it has sculpted your worldview as a fear-based reality. It does not have to be this way.. When peter stepped onto the water and was actually walking on it, how incredibly risky and vulnerable he must have felt; yet he stayed above by a deep faith that Jesus told him that he could do it. He trusted, he believed, he had faith. Yet faith is always believing in something that has not yet happened to you. He never walked on water before, so why did he trust that he could do it now? It's the same thing with those who are fearful and socially anxious. We've never done it before, what makes us think we can do it now. That is what faith is! Taking the plunge into vulnerability and trusting. Trusting and believing that you will do what you have never done before. It is magnetic.
Faith is at the foundation of all things in life. If you want to continue to let the fear muscle dominate your life, you will continue to be a magnet for negativity. If, however, you want to start weakening that muscle and flexing your faith, then start exploring how to use this magnetic force to your advantage every day. Next time you talk to someone, think about this concept. Think about how you will draw in positive reaction and positive feelings within yourself. You will see a momentous change in your internal world if you do this. Things will start to expand for you; your fear will shrink and faith will increase. It may FEEL vulnerable, but do it anyway and EXPECT that your faith will magnetize all things positive to yourself and within yourself. Many times people take the plunge and do things they usually wouldn't, yet they are still doing it in FEAR. I am saying that the next time you do something you normally wouldn't, this time do it in faith and expectation of the magnetic good things that will come about.
I hope you can get the idea and truth that I am getting at, as it can absolutely change the way you see the world.
