Selective hearing would be great. Unfortunately that's just selective responding.
I pretended not to hear people all the time in school, whenever I felt I could get away with it. I wasn't going to speak to anyone anyway, and that was the most polite-seeming excuse for it.
Your first story is just such an awkward inappropriate thing to shout in a crowded room that ignoring seems like it'd be the only appropriate response. Shouting back "I couldn't care less about you" in front of the class would be a little rude. It's kind of like the people who propose on the PA at sporting events to try to apply massive peer pressure... just manipulative on their part.
