Yeah.. hope is a terrible thing. You know in that movie.. Shawshank Redemption.. sure the guy managed to escape but a more likely scenario is that he just kept chipping away and then eventually died of inhaling toxic fumes from the rocks just as he was a few metres from the end. Then crocodiles would have come and eaten his body.
