"I don't watch much TV"

When someone says this, does it bug you because it implies that they have better things to do? I hate it when teens my age say this. I think of them not having time to watch TV because they're with friends, while I'm just sitting in front of the TV or computer screen all night.

If not, what are some things you hear a lot that indirectly imply that the other person has more of a life, and makes you feel like crap?

You are making a big deal out of someone simply stating that they don't watch a lot of TV.

I know I'm jumping to conclusions. But usually they don't because they don't have the time.

I don't watch much TV either, but not because I'm out socializing. No, I spend most of my free time reading, and walking alone in the woods with my dog. I don't feel superior or anything because I don't watch much TV.

It Is good to have that "idiot box" in the room. Just to watch news or some sport sometimes but generally I think that tv is a massive time devourer. I feel guilty while being glued to tv screen...

I understand your point,

I get the same feeling when I hear people say that, but then, I feel depressed when people tell me that they watch television.

I keep thinking that there are better things to be doing with time, if not socializing, expanding my mind or experiencing life somehow.

Also, on the subject of television, I used to while away alot of my lonely hours with tv or films. Because I'd had little exposure to real conversations and interactions, I modeled people on what I saw. However, if you have seen any actors or actresses interviewed and wittnessed how terribly bland and banal they are (especially compared to their characters) then you can begin to realize that television and film isn't real. The wit and dynamics could only be found with script writers and their academic/artistic friends. However, probably these scripts are drafted, written and rewritten. They most likely don't just roll of the tougue as they seem to the viewer. Furthermore, actors and actresses are generally very physically attractive people. So we have people of well above average looks delivering rehersed lines from well over averagely intelligent script writers. Phew! No wonder I never thought I had anything interesting to say.

Perhaps watching reality tv shows is a better choice to soaps and films. Because despite the good looks of contestants, their dialogue is at best average.

I watch lots of TV. My parents both worked when I was young (sometimes 2 jobs at a time). So TV was my parent, companion, baby sitter, sibling, friend, etc. When cable and MTV came out I was glued to The Headbangers' Ball. TV keeps evolving, now I have Comcast digital on demand and High-def. I can watch HD movies such as Gandhi, Cider House Rules, Dazed and Confused, etc. in unedited widescreen commercial-free high-def 5.1 surround sound anytime I want. Sure I'd rather be traveling the world and meeting tons of people, but until I can afford to do that I'll relax with some boob tube.

Some of my favorite programs are: Monk, Psyche, Dr. Who, Stargate, South Park, Nova, Frontline, SNL, Heroes, Simpsons.

Well, not necessarily. I never ever watch TV, but it still doesen't mean I "have better things to do".

But to answer your question about what I that indirectly implies that the other person has more of a life... well, I get that quite often. For instance, not too long ago I was reading the newest Harry Potter book (for the second time) in a short break between classes and a friend asked about the book and started talking about Harry Potter and comparing how long it took us to read the books. Then, one of the more 'socially adept' girls asked if I had read it through the night on the release. When I answered yes, she tossed her head in another direction while flicking her hair and mumbled something like "well, at least some people have time on their hands".

So, yes, I totally understand your point
