How does one go about making friends?

The friends I have now were pretty much all met through another friend.
Basically I met them through my friend. Who I met through my ex. Who I met through my cousin.
I don't know how to approach someone... Er, I kinda do, but the fear of being seen as creepy or desperate kind of overides my desire to make friends.
Even in a classroom setting. I'm kind of too shy to look to the side and greet the person and get to know them.
I really want to start knowing more people, especially since I have summer school this summer... Which is an opportunity for me to meet new people. As well as me taking the bus home.

I've met some of bestest friends through church. That's what I like to do but people I've tried to befriend at school or somewhat social places like coffee houses have actually turned me down or we've made other hang out dates like movie releases...it's a process gotta keep trying the worst that that happen is they don't understand or busy whatever, can't take it personal!::

Find something you love doing like dancing or playing a sport, that way you kind of have to interact with people and then you start to get to know them plus you share a similar interest
