How do you find a job?

I'm a 19 year old and never had a job before. I'm at the point in my life where i need money...no I NEED experiences.

So my question is...How do you find a job?

Do you look for "hiring" signs?

Or

Do you just apply to anywhere...Because that's way I've been doing for the last 3 years or so. I'm starting to think if they're not putting up a sign up, then I shouldn't even apply there? Am I right?

Especially in an economy like this, am i even going to find hiring signs at all?
I'm just looking for entry level jobs. I've been looking at local grocery stores and just general stores. But, I don't know if they're hiring or not.

I search ads in newspaper and magazines,or somebody that I worked with hooks me up,right now I cant find any,you have to really stand out,for one job there will be about 15 people competing there also,at least where I am.
