Anxiety disorder is one of the most common conditions that psychiatrists encounter in their day to day work. One of the most interesting facts about anxiety disorder’ however’ is that it is actually not one single condition’ but a number of conditions brought together under one blanket term. These individual conditions which are classified under the name anxiety disorder include ‘the generalized anxiety disorder’ where the patient’s whole life is characterized by various rather inexplicable fears/worries’ panic disorder’ the whole range of phobias’ and social anxiety (intense shyness)’ which is the condition that forces most people to seek medical help; as it can severely interfere with the patient’s general enjoyment of life. Another interesting fact about anxiety disorder (the whole range of conditions that are encompassed under the term) is its commonness: where we are told that as many as 17% percent – or even more – of Americans are haunted by one or another condition which is classified as an anxiety disorder. Yet in spite of these numbers’ most of the people suffering from anxiety disorder imagine that they are doing so in isolation’ with many actually being ashamed of their conditions; unaware that what they go through is something so many other people struggle with. Yet another interesting fact about anxiety disorder’ and contrary to what many people undergoing it imagine’ is that the condition (that is’ almost all conditions encompassed under the term anxiety disorder) has a physiological basis: so that your struggle with anxieties need not be as a result of your ‘weakness of character.’ You could be a person of very strong character’ but due to your genetic makeup’ you find yourself still haunted by anxiety disorder. Of course’ this is not to say that everyone who is plagued by anxieties should just resign themselves to the fact that they are biologically predisposed to the same conditions’ because when all is said and done’ heredity is not destiny’ and you can take responsibility for your feelings in various situations. The fourth interesting fact about anxiety disorder is that it is actually a treatable condition. This is mentioned as an interesting fact about the condition’ seeing that most people who struggle with it live under the impression that the condition is a ‘part of them’ – much like their height – and that there is absolutely nothing they can do about it. Yet the truth of the matter is that anxiety disorder can be treated’ and there have been cases where courses of treatment have been so successful that people who were previously haunted by various fears ended up so far-drawn from those fears after treatment’ that they came to forget what living with the same fears was like. The moral in this fact is simple: that you need not let anxiety disorder compromise on your quality of life and life enjoyment. The condition can be treated’ in most cases’ and sometimes all that is required in the name of treating some forms of anxiety disorder is simply a change in one’s thinking patterns ---------------------easier said than done, i bet most of you agree!
