Computer responsible?

Is the computer responsible for me being more and more anti-social and depleting my social skills? I've noticed that when I spend lots of time on the computer I start feeling like a robot. I sometimes feel that my major(computer science) isn't exactly helping. I never do anything that requires self expression in school, etc. I feel like I'm letting go of any or all charisma I may possess.

I don't know if this makes sense, but I know that a lot of other computer science majors are just like me. Maybe they chose computer science because they are anti-social or they developed an anti-social personality after years and years spent on the PC. I like writing programs on my computer, but I don't want to be one of them.

I know some very sociable computer people but I think it does attract a lot of social phobics too. People can hide away and just be a computer nerd but still have a socially acceptable profession - so in that way it's not a bad thing.

Computing is such a huge field that you can choose more interesting aspects, like companies working on innovative technology or great websites or something. If you've got some creative ability along with the straight IT stuff then it's a good combination. I wouldn't stop doing something you're good at because it might make your social phobia worse. If you're committed to dealing with the SP then I don't think it matters.

If it wasn't for the computer I would have no social skills. Without the computer I would have killed myself. My only social interaction is on the internet. I have no friends except those on the net.

The computer has helped me socially. I can practise my social skills here. It is easier for me to type than to talk. On the net I'm not afraid to be myself. I also have gained much information from the internet. If it wasn't for my computer I wouldn't be typing this message right now! :p

I've always been spending a lot of time with my computer - since I was 10 or 12 I have prefered the computer instead of being social. I'm 18 now. I'm sure it has had a big influence on my SA - when I was younger I didn't really feel much like being with the kids after school.. it was not like I was lonely.. I just liked playing games etc. I even remember some kid saying that my computer was my friend. That must have been when I was 12 or 13.. maybe younger. Anyway. It prevented me from getting any social confidence. When I got the age 14-16 I grew kind of tired of sitting in front of my computer.. but at that time I didn't really have any alternatives. Sooo. I've been going on a kind of boarding school for two years, but I got home last summer. Anyway. During the years on boarding school I didn't spend much time at the computer. Almost nothing - I didn't enjoy using it anymore. Instead I wanted to be social. Unfortunately that didn't safe me from the SA.. but it might have helped some. Now I just use the computer to search for info regarding all kinds of topics (the internet is really magnificent - especially wikipedia ;)), msn, and looking at this site. It is not that much time infront of the computer anymore. Unlike some people in here said I haven't really found it that much easier communicating via the internet, like meeting people etc. So it's mostly for informational use. Hmmm

I often thought my computer could be the cause of my SA to an extent, i got my first comp when i was about 17 and that about the same time my SA started to get worse, so instead of being out and enjoying my self at 17 like others my age i went the other way and stayed in all the time on my computer, only over the past 6 months have i really cut down my comp use and i can say that i feel better for it.

Instead of coming on here i try and find other stuff to do even just wash my car or tidy up, one thing i did do was to make my computer uncomfortable to sit it by conecting it up to my TV so that if i want to use my comp i kinda have to sit on the floor infront of the TV and belive me it works in stopping me from going on it as much.
