The basic idea behind CBT is to question negative thinking patterns and behaviors and change them to more resourceful and realistic ones.
This is great in theory but requires incredible persistence to overcome years, maybe decades, of thought habits. It also requires great faith that the method will pay off and, when we are feeling particularly depressed, (i.e when we need it the most) it becomes even more difficult. This is because our CONSCIOUS minds, which is responsible for questioning the patterns, is many times less influential than our SUBCONSCIOUS minds which control our emotions.
Our emotions are what drive our behaviour. When we are consumed with emotion, like anxiety for example, our thinking mind becomes distorted and suppressed making it difficult to control our thoughts. I believe that the most effective therapies are the ones that work on our subconscious minds.
Let me know if you've tried CBT and what your experiences are.
