My mum had Social phobia before me, I think I may have got it of her or somthing. I used to go shopping with her ages ago and she used to be shaking and getting nervous when paying at the till and I was like god why is she so weird. But now I am like that and she isn't...

i dont think u can "catch" Anxiety. It is generic tho in some cases. My Grand mother is the only relative I know who has it, luckily in our modern society its better understood and we can get help!

It's not disease. You don't catch it.You either learn it through behavior
or get it through generics.

I can definitely see symptons of SP and anxiety in my parent. I agree though- you don't catch it, you either learn it or get it through generics. It could well be a mixture of both.

its something ive thought about.... neither of my parents have it, they are both confident and intelligent, but my sister has anxiety (manic depression) and i have SA.... strange

i worry about passing it on to my kids if i have any...

I agree it could be a genetic trait or learned through behaviour patterns of parents/ guardians / close relatives/ friends.

It can also be triggered by a traumatic event in your life, rape etc....

Yep you prob learned this beahviour from your mother subconciously. What you learn when youre young can be difficult to shake when your older im in the exact same boat. i.e. youve learned english now try and unlearn that. see.

I think I was born and was a sensitive soul like my parents but it was made worse by the peolpe around me. was it because of my parents? Was it because I was an only child and did not have the development of social skills that brothers and sisters may develop or was it a mixture of both? This keeps going round in my head, but the most important thing is that we can change it now. It's not easy but we have to do it. How long is it going to take me to live a 'normal' life without the stresses of people and their reaction to me? Please tell me yr experiences. I am new to this site and it is very liberating and I am so glad that we can help each other. Feeling like the only one who feels like this so isolating.

It is partly genetic. My mum suffers with anxiety, depression and nerves, and whilst I am the last child of 3, all 3 of us suffer in some respect. Unfortunately I seem to be the worst!

My older sister suffers from depression. My middle sister is pretty much ok but can be moody. I suffer from anxiety and depression.

Developed it in my mid teens and it has plagued my life ever since. My mum has never been able to get over it, so I feel what hope is there for me! BUT we all different, and whilst people never are totally free from fears, you can address them, work around them, and get a better quality of life.
