Can the doctor do home visits? Would that be any easier?
Yes, having someone supportive to go with definitely helps.
What about going into the surgery spontaneously, so you don't have time to work yourself up? (Probably easier said than done).
I managed to go to the doctor this week after putting it off time and time again, and it went well. He was supportive and understanding, and gave me a choice of medication. It's definitely worth going.
