Hi. I don't like to use terms relating to mental illness loosely--but I wanted to catch anyone's attention who might know something about having been parented by a mother or a father who could show extreme love but also hurt you emotionally, just as successfully. If this is called something else, please let me know: My mother refuses to attend family counseling and as far as I can tell won't return to her own, individual therapy, so I don't know of a true diagnosis; all I know is I am tired of feeling bad for no reason.
I'm just so tired of feeling like I'm eternally playing a guessing game/being subjected to mind games/feeling guilty for having done nothing wrong. I'm an only child, as is my widowed mom--so there's very little other support/"corrective feedback". I know the advice is to draw boundaries, but she's old and alone and what I really want to do is just sever ties--but really can't, as she would live in a state of neglect.
