Does anyone have any experience with backpacking hostels? Its where I am now and its not quite as Tarantino painted it, although the town is more so.
People from all over the world with a very worldly view. They have seen vastly more than I and have naturally very developed social skills. I've never seen people as confident and yet so in touch with reality. Im so glad that I could get a single room, abet with communual bathrooms, which are in no small part embarrasing. Especially today, my body wouldn't function in the urinal next to a alpha male relaxed type. I hide in my room alot, whenever I see anyone, stare and try and make an awkward greeting. Read too much into the cleaners intention, when I arranged for her to meet me after her shift, she didn't rip off my clothes and throw me onto the bed like Id envisaged. In fact, the more specific I made my intentions know in my broken Chinese, the less it was going to happen. In the bathroom, I try and make talk with a buff Westerner, don't know if I am supposed to look at the reflection or him. In elevators, they have mirrors, whenever I look up from my feet, people are looking at me with either bemused or strange expressions. I need information about life. I need to go into conversations empty with things to say, just to get gleams of information from others.
AHHHHHHHHH!!
For those that have never tried backpacking hostels. Let me say, they open new worlds of possibilities. But, they are one of the hardest social situations Ive encountered. However, Im only in this Beijing one for another night. I think that if I was to do it for a month or so, Id get alot more comfortable with it. Hope so, because its a lot cheaper and potentially alot more fun.
