Anxiety and short term memory

something curios happened to me , i remembered one of my friends on high school (3 years ago) toldme that i was always anixous, when i remembered that i told my sister that said, "Yeah it describes you perfectly".

Since that i'm noticing that i feel varying degrees of anxiety the whole day, and well , i don't knew how to describe it before, to me it was just my normal me. People say that i speak to fast and often do things in a hurry...

I also noticed a very peculiar fact about me when i'm anxious, my short term memory worsen a lot. It very hard to recall a number or a name i've just read or keep track of something i was just doing. these days i had to ask a guy something that i had just told him like 1 minute ago, that was funny... In fact is a lot hard to concentrate at all.

someone have "simptoms" like this?

That's probably because when you're anxious your mind is constantly racing all over the place, so if someone tells you a phone number or something even if you listen you'll probably stop thinking about it almost right away, then you'll forget it.

Yeah. I forget things easily too. If I went to the supermarket (when I have to force myself to go) and my mum called my cellphone last minute lets say asking me to get her toothpaste and eggs, I get the toothpaste, but usually forget the eggs. It's ridiculous cause it was like '1 minute ago phone call'.
So I stop trying, I just let me be forgetful and live a stress free life. Cos I think that's the best way to deal with my anxiety than to have so many things to remember plus being away from home and having so many thoughts on my mind to get home quickly before I get a full blown panic attack!

For me, I have difficulties with that because my mind races all over the place. When I am worried about a person's reaction or something like that, I may miss important details that they are telling me. Fortunately, I have progressed to the point where I am confident enough to ask people to repeat things.

Definitely an issue, its the worst in school when others make it seem so simple to remember things. Worst experience was in grade 9 English class(7 years ago, still haunts me) when I was put in a group with drama students and we had to summarize a story. The drama students of course read the story once and could recite all the details (with charisma, naturally) and tell it to the class. I refused to take part in that presentation, it would have been a nightmare. I would have had to read it 50 times, then maybe I'd be able to shakily mumble to the class what it was about lol

I've noticed my short term memory is not great, also. I can remember both my cars' chassis numbers (17 digits each) and my ex's phone number from three years ago, but not what I did this morning.

I was asked at uni, when I eventually struggled enough to get into class, what my student email address was and I just could not remember it. Of course in an anxious situation it is worse as your thoughts are indeed 'all over the place' - it is a lack of focus. I find it hard to concentrate on things fully.

Being anxious DEFINITLY will have an effect on short term memory. I've been labeled as "retarded" (seriously) for being anxious in situations and not remembering things that were being said right off short term.

Wow, I thought it was just me. I have problems with short term memory too and I can totally relate to you all. Sometimes I think about something one minute and if I drop that thought for a minute it takes a while to pick it back up. Never did I think it could be anxiety related.

Hi , well my medicated treatment for anxiety caused massive short term memory loss. Now that I have found a way to recover from my anxiety my memory has improved dramatically. See I also had longer term memory loss, you could say I didn't recall all that much. Now thanks it has got much better.Cheers Graeme
