I'm making an appointment to see my doctor tomorrow 'cause I've officially hit rock bottom. I'm going to ask him to prescribe me anti-depressants.

I've been on Efexor before. I can't remember my weight beforehand but i remember when i suddenly stopped taking them i lost a LOT of weight. About 3 stone. And i loved it - everyone was sayin' i looked so much better and were amazed by my transformation.

Anywho thats not the point... What i want to know is, Has anyone gained weight because of anti-depressants? And if so - how do you think it can be prevented?
My friend has, but she blames water retention from alcohol.

Id be glad to hear everyones experiences because I need anti-depressants I'm terrified of putting on weight. I'll end up suffering from a heart attack if i do!

Anti-depressants known to cause weight gain are ones like Paxil and Remeron. Ones that are known to be either neutral or cause weight loss are Wellbutrin or Celexa. Effexor is more on the "can cause weight gain" side.

Wellbutrin or Topamax(an anti-convulsant) lower your appetite, thus causing weight loss.

There is 3 ways to attain weight loss through drugs, they are:

A) appetite surpression
B) preventing the fat from being absorbed in your intestines
C) increase the body's metabolism

I only know of drugs that cause appetite surpression. Drugs like Wellbutrin, Straterra, Topamax or stronger drugs like Adderall, Ritalin, Dexedrine etc etc.

Ask your doctor about medication that can help you lose weight if you think that is a problem you have. Also tell them how your problem affects your life and the quality of your life. Doing this will better convince the doctor to give you medication.
