Always listen to what your child is trying to tell you...

My Name is John, and my 13-year-old daughter goes to John Wallace Middle School in Newington, CT. She'll be 14 and she's going into high school this fall. She had an assignment to do in her Language Arts class. She chose to write a poem about bullying. Her mom died when she was only two weeks old. I have four children, and she's the youngest. The others were 7, 10, and 14 at the time. Now, the older ones have completed school and college. It's hard enough having two parents bring up four children, one being a newborn, let alone one parent. For her to grow up and to pick writing a poem on bullying shows how children hold their pain in from it. As you must know, it is very hard and rewarding to bring up a child with special needs, and other children take advantage of their special needs. My 13-year-old daughter is a very special, loving, caring child that only thinks about others. There should be more children like her, so she doesn't have to see these acts of bullying in school and at other places. I am so proud of her, to have picked an assignment about bullying. If children were raised properly, they wouldn't have to feel they had to bully other children. I believe that parents who were bullied as children, became bullies. As the old saying goes, “What you’re around, you become.” I think that if people like my daughter think this way, it’s phenomenal.

Here is her poem:

Bullied

I am bullied
I wonder why?
I hear people talking behind my back
I just want to be normal

I am bullied
I pretend that I don’t hear it
I feel like my life is switching off
I worry that it will spin out of control
I cry when it happens to me

I am bullied
I understand that they might have gotten bullied
I say to myself don’t listen to them.
I dream that bullying was not allowed
I try to ignore it as much as I can
I hope they will just stop
I am bullied

THE CHILD: AN UNFORGOTTEN ROSE

Just because a rose dies of natures way
It doesn’t mean that the beauty of the rose is gone or forgotten
She is still there, with her beauty in the eyes that have seen her
You have seen a beautiful rose with your eyes
And for this she shall always be alive in your heart
So don’t be saddened; for all of nature’s wonderful beauties
must revolve to keep the hands of time from coming to an end

THE FINAL ENDING

When I lost my wife
soon after child birth of my fourth child,
I lost all faith in God,
as we were together from just 15 years old.

And four children are "life was but a dream"
until that first night.
She came home with the new born angel still happy,
but headache that would sure kill her.

I remarried years later,
and thought "there is a God."
Soon later on that same road,
that we never expect what's around the corner.
She decides she wants to go on her own way,
lost again on this road.

I met a woman who sat me down,
and explained that it's not God's fault.
And everything is for a reason.

So, maybe that is why I have joined back in life,
to see if she is out there waiting for me.
If she is, I ask but a few things,
Please love me as I will always love you,
and don't walk away, as the roads ahead
are no different than the one you are on now.

But at least you will know you have true love here,
that will always be by your side,
as a promise that will never be broken.
For our foundation is built
on honestness, kindness, caring and loving for each other,
as we walk down the road together.

About this poem:
I wrote this because I believe there is someone for everyone. No matter how bad things get, they're out there for each other. Maybe a bit lost, but they will find each other sooner or later. So, don't give up, as no one else should.

TO MY DEAR LITTLE PRINCESS

Your eyes so bright with new life
Your mind so fresh with new ideas
Your memory beginning to make
Your ideas beginning to take.

You’re the world’s new beginning of life
The world will see new through you
You’re who I left to see what I haven’t,
and to add new beginnings for others as I have.

You’re my new little princess of life
You’ll have my eyes to help you at
those times of darkness and distress
when you can no longer see clearly
I hope you can be something other than me
Your ideas will make us more…

I’ve heard people say that
life is but a twinkle among the stars
But through your heart there will be
many new worlds to be explored.

Life will go on as every day brings a new beginning
You’re my new little princess of life and my love for you
will live on through all new worlds of life
So carry on that world of life to a new beginning
And there will always be us.

Love Always,
Daddy

About this poem:
I wrote this poem in the 80s when I had my first daughter. It was on her first day of school and she was getting off the school bus, and I just couldn't believe how big she was getting. She's 29 now, and I am just as proud of her today as I was back then. It was Published 1990 Great Poems of the Western World Vol. II
