Admitting it...

Well ive known i've been ocd since i was around 11 im 16 now, but until last week when my dad kicked me out for doing one of my rituals i had to tell him it took me three days... and i didnt even sleep 10 min i couldnt think of anything but telling him, and it just felt that i couldnt take it anymore, so after finally admitting it to him, i convinced him to take me to a mental health center and now i have to go and get a medication in a week and have been getting counceling every week for a month now, and on top of that there saying that hiding my ocd from everyone has made me depressed.. so i guess the question is...is there anyway to stop me from being ocd other then pills?? :( really all advice would be greatly appreciated..

For anyone who replies thanks, im stuck in montana and really confused...i could just use all the advice i can get.. im not sure how much longer i can take it, it seems that as i get older, they take more and more of my day up, and i can't hold under the pressure..

Look for someone who knows how to treat OCD with Cognitive behavioral therapy using Exposure and response prevention.

Asking for advice

Thanks for your honesty. I admire you for your courage.

First of all, you have not shared with us the types of Obsessive Thinking/Compulsive Behaviour you have . It might help to do so. But only when you are ready.

Trust in other words.

Second, the mind is like a machine. It needs rest, it needs maintenance, it needs quiet times. Some of us think we are "bullet proof" so we go through life never giving it rest, no maintenance and never any quiet times. This is what I would call "self harm".

You know, like putting your left thumb up on a door frame and hitting it with a hammer in your right hand. And doing that day after day expecting a different result ( why does it hurt ? ). This is insanity. One needs to stop picking up the hammer to get well.

Am I making sense ?

If you suffer from a "busy mind " you might try buddhist or hindu meditation. Here in Australia the hindu meditation groups are free; buddhist ones are often $ 10 a session. I have found them helpful to almost eliminate my busy mind.

Two, talking to someone else about your thoughts ( counselling ) is a way to get the cancer out. Some of us call this "venting" or "eliminating our secrets".

You have not mentioned anything about loneliness, low self confidence, or these issues. Are they a factor ?

Third, you have not mentioned your family or origin stuff. Are your parents happily married, divorced, are you the eldest child, youngest child, envious of your siblings, are you a member of a blended family ( Brady Bunch....two parents who have remarried with the kids thrown together) ?

Fourth, depression. It is very common for people who keep secrets, who try to solve things that are beyond their control all by themselves, who have a busy mind....to develop depression.

Covert depression is something that goes on undiagnosed for years. Its an emptiness inside.

Overt depression is something that we start to talk about...bring to the surface. Medication is used for EVERYONE with overt depression to get them to sleep and deal with quietning the mind. It can be either a temporary or life time medication. Everyone is different.

I would like to ask you some questions:

a) What sports do you play ?

b) How many close friends do you have of your own gender ?

c) Have you ever done volunteer work ?

d) At school do you sit at the front of each class, or in the back rows ?

Take care. Be well.
