Question for people in the UK from a person in the USA.

In America it is no problem to talk to strangers if you have good converstion skills and they seem open to converstion, but I've read in the UK it is considered rude to try to talk to someone you don't know. (Like trying to make small talk with a stranger on a train for example.)
I read that it's only considerer proper to talk to someone that has been formally introduced to you by a mutual friend.

Is this true?? I bet it makes it double hard for a person with SA that no social circle at all?

:?: :D

I've travelled on the London subway system 50 times. No stranger has ever tried to talk to me. The first time I was on a New York subway train, one did (about baseball)! I felt shocked, and since I suffer from social anxiety, he didn't get a friendly response. But now I've discovered the fun of having company, I would love strangers to approach me. Maybe I should emigrate :p.

iam from the UK and i think its not so much as its considered rude or anything. its just that most american people are probably a lot more talkative wheather as in the uk you could walk around a city for a whole day and never even get asked for the time.

COALPORTER, to a certain degree you are right. As a whole, I think British people are much more reserved than other nations, but if you started talking to someone in the UK, I'm sure that they would reciprocate.

I think it depends on where you live. There are cities who's inhabitants are known to be friendlier than others. I have no idea why that is though. I personally believe that there are friendly people wherever you go and chances are, someone is going to say hi.
