People's experiences with diazepam?

Hi there,

I suffer from social anxiety/phobia. I was in a pub with my partner and some friends on New Year's Eve, and it was packed out with people, as you'd expect. I normally avoid social situations such as this, but I felt I shouldn't miss out on the New Year celebrations. I felt unbelievably anxious, like I didn't know where to look or how to behave. I was so tense; I felt like I couldn't move. I spent 95% of the night sitting outside on a bench, and only managed to come in for the 10-second countdown. I'm wondering whether I would benefit from diazepam to help me in these situations. Does anyone here take it, and do you notice a huge improvement in social situations?

Thanks :)

for social situations, better than diazepam is :
Bromazepam - but as in many substances ,
it depends on the fact whcih company make it.

It is really good for social things, it relaxes muscle tension.

I've never taken it but i've heard it works great. During panic attacks I take Ativan, it does great calming you down, but the thing is panic attacks come fast and go by the time it kicks in...so it would only be good for taking it before you go somewhere you think you might have an attack...

I dunno. I don't really trust depressants like that.

Diazapam would help but beware...
It's just far too fun too abuse it. Whenever I ever get any benzo's I have like 7 of them... but maybe u wont have this problem.
Taken properly it's a godsend... tolerance and dependance will kick in quickly tho

I take Clonazepam and it works great for me. I don't take it at night because I think that it has a short duration. I take 45 mg in a month, icreasing in social situations, decreasing at home. It does tend to make you sleepy somake sure that you're alert for driving.

It isn't a cure though, just very helpful.

how many of you guys taking medication are based in the UK?

and how helpful was your GP when dealing with your S.A.D?AvPD?

I am thinking about seing my GP next time school is on holiday in a few weeks (i am going to try "exposere" therap first) but i am worried that my "condition" won;t be taken seriously or will be misdiagnosed as "simple" depression.

i DID find a site that says which anti anxiety drugs are available on the NHS, but i'm not sure if i am allowed to post links here.

Benzos like diazepam work great, but they will make you tired and they are physically and psychologically addictive and it's hell to get off them. You also build up a tolerance to them as time goes on and require a larger dose to get the same effect. Only use them if psychotherapy and/or SSRI's do not work.

google benzo withdrawl

8) yeah diazepam
my dad gave it to me when i got stressed for my exam german
I don't think it's usefull for prelonged use as it is quite addictive, but i guess it's a good anti anxiety pill for such situations.
 I also remember ending up taking way too much, so I decided to stop using it.
it's valium,isn't it?

Yes it's the generic of Valium. Sometimes benzos will almost make you feel like you didn't have any anxiety for awhile(and you feel great), but they will make you tired and eventually they won't work as well and you will have to increase the dose to get the same effect. With a higher dose and the longer you use them, the harder it is to stop. I have heard they are harder to quit than Heroin. I wish I could get off my benzos, but I can't. I have to take a certain amount of benzos everyday just so I won't get withdrawl symptoms. When the benzos wear off, you get something called "rebound anxiety" which is more anxiety than you would have if you didn't take them. So, you have to keep taking them to remain comfortable and it's just a real pain to get off them. I have heard people have to quit their jobs for at least 6 months, because withdrawl is so bad and you have to use an xacto knife to cut the pills into progressively smaller and smaller doses. You have to decrease the dose very gradually and it's still is a pain... I wish I never got on them, but SSRIs and therapy never worked and I would be a total hermit without them....

no offense, but maybe you should see a doctor(if you aren't already) cuz like you said it's very addictive...and eventually you will end up screwing your life up more than you would by not taking them anymore. My uncle got them to quit his alcohol addiction but then he got addicted to the pills :? which was even worse...

I'm gonna stress like many others here did that any kind of benzos like diazepam is highly addictive (and the more frequently you take them, the less effective). I've been prescribed Ativan for panic attacks and take them only when I'm having them - which is once a couple months - and it really helps. I find that when I take them just for general anxiety other times they don't work as well - I feel a bit groggy but the anxiety is still there underneath.

I've used Valium but it didn't work for me. I prefer Xanax, however others say Valium really helps so it is worth a shot. You cannot use them every day for a period of time as some people point out. However using on a as need basis will allow you to take them for years without becoming addicted.

I have been addicted to diazipam(valium), and it is no fun coming off it. I was taking 60mg a day. I still take it now but is closely monitored. It is addictive, it isn't an answer either. I have benn taking it for eight years now.

Lorazepam is fantastic. It worked wonders for me&despite how addictive it is, I didn't abuse it once. It's just a great feeling when you think you're going into a full blown panic attack&take some and just feel...normal. It gave me normalcy&that's what I liked about it.
It wasn't for the general anxiety, more for the panic attacks.
Too bad I'm no longer on it&just have to tough the panic attacks out.
Eeps.
