Non-prescription medications

Hi, are there any "non-prescription" and non-"pill" treatments for social anxiety (e.g. not eating makes you think less, and therefore less self-conscious)

I guess this is kind of a lame question, but I have sort of a fear of taking pills for mental conditions. You know, with all these pharmaceutical companies being "exposed" for either making the condition worse, causing other illnesses, containing carcinogens, etc. I also don't want to take pills because I have a fear of being "taken over" by the medication, and not being truly myself. I know I am stupid to think this; please don't take it the wrong way .

There are tons of herbal supplements and vitmains, ect. that are siad to help anxiety but I've tried tons of them with no results. Most of them are processed by various herbal pharmacies and encapsulated so I don't know how you feel about that but you can always buy the actuall herbs themselves it's just more expensive and less safe because the companies or people that sell just the herb are less regulated and aren't standardized to insure the quantitiy of active ingreadient contained in the herb is consistant. There is SJW, Valerian, kava kava, Kanna, Kratom, ect. But to warn you just going the herbal rout isn't going to protect you from your condition possibly being made worse from the product, developing other conditions, or containing carcinogens. A lot of herbals are less safe than pharmacueticals. Example Kava Kava is known to possible cause liver disease when used to often, tobacoo contains many carcinogens and reeks havic on your health and many of them are not due to chemicals the companies are adding but are just contained in the tobacoo leaf, some can even cause death when to much is ingested (which for some isn't that much).

If you live in California visit a medical cannabis doctor and he'll probably give you a recommendation for a drug that's been used safely to treat anxiety for the past 3,000 years: marijuana.

I sometimes take a supplement called 5-HTP, which is an amino acid which gets directly converted in to serotonin, the 'happy chemical' in your brain once it's ingested. I've personally found it more effective than prescription anti-depressants that I was on when younger. I normally take it at times when my sleeping isn't up to scratch, as it is especially helpful for people that suffer with sleeping problems, or at times of extra stress.

I also take a premium quality fish oil daily which is also good for mental health as well as being great for pretty much everything that happens in your body. I make sure I get all my other required vitamins from my diet.

I'm a firm believer that what you put in your body can have a massive effect on how you feel. I also think folk with mental health problems can be particularly sensitive to what they eat/drink, and can suffer from a poor diet more than other people.

Ultimately, happiness is just a chemical in your brain, and if your diet is crap then your body can't physically make these chemicals. Gotta give yourself the best chance possible of feeling better.

As has been said though, make sure if you consider taking supplements that you educate yourself about them beforehand; it's easy to via the 'net of course. Just because they're natural it doesn't always mean they're safe for everyone.
