I just given up on Tricyclic antidepressants ( it have not done anything to me except for for dry mouth and eccessive sweating).
I have been given mirtazapine ( tetracyclic antidepressant)) instead. It has sedative properties and it works a bit like tranquilizer. I take it before I go to bed to calm down ( it makes sleepy and drowsy) to relief my insomnia. It is Quite difficult to wake up in the mornings in the early phase of treatment (30 mg tablets) but I expect my body to get used to this medication later. What I noticed, the more sleep I get ( in my case it has to be about 8 h) the less anxious during the day I am. Sleep deprivation has horrible effect on my anxiety. We will see how it goes.

Does mirtazapine really help social anxiety?

it helps a bit,it gives me a better sleep, my stomach is not so tight but I still feel paranoid while I have to leave the house, to do shopping etc.. I do not think there is any perfect drug.
Few options, specifically prescribed for SP, left for me to try: moclobemide out of MAOi and Venlafaxine( SNRi). My doctor do not prescribe me venlafaxine so as he said,I would have to be refered to psychiatrist to get some of those med.
But I do not know if there is any point in going there. I am gonna see my GP tomorrow to discuss my future.

Moclobemide doesn't work. I can't believe they still prescribe it. Ever try Nardil (MAOI)? It's the best.

NO I have never tried nardil. I don't think I would ever be prescribed that drug. You seems to be the biggest protagonist of that medication on this board.
How would you persuade me to talk my doctor into taking that risk? What have you achieved under influence of Nardil? What are the disadvantages of that drug. Please justify your choice. Cheers

Nardil is the gold standard when treating Social Phobia until the early-mid 90's when Zoloft, Prozac, and Paxil started cornering the market. The problem is that the Pharmaceutical companies have a lot of "pull" in influencing the medications that doctors prescribe. Unfortunately, Nardil is barely prescribed anymore because the drug companies can't really make money off it anymore.

There is also the issue with the diet, and many doctors feel uncomfortable prescribing the drug due to the interactions with certain foods and drugs. The dietary restrictions are overrated, but ever so often a complete dolt will mix the drug with cocaine and meth, and will have a severre reaction.

Nardil was the first drug I ever tried and it is simply amazing what it did. Not only did I feel less anxious socially, it made me realize I was suffering from depression, because I felt so good on it. Like never before in my life I was thinking "people can actually feel this happy?' My grades also shot up because my inability to concentrate at school was erased, and I actually enjoyed going for the first time in my life.

Unfortunately the disadvantage to Nardil for me is my body seems to develop a tolerance for the drug after about 5 months, so I ahve to sometimes get off the drug for a couple of monthss and take it again. But it's worth it. Paxil, Zoloft, and Effexor have done a good job in handling my social anxiety, but did hardly anything to alleviate my depression and concentration problems (ADD?). Wellbutrin helped the concentration, but it never came near what Nardil did.

When you talk with your doctor, my advice would be to beg for it. Threaten to switch doctors if he doesn't prescribe it to you. Remember, it was used fairly often for depressed patients in the 70's and 80's. Plus, most people who have experienced both seem to think that the old drugs MAOI's and even TCA's are better than the new drugs (SSRI's). I hope your doctor is open minded because it works for a lot of people with SA>
