then why does the fight and flight trigger a panic attack

Answer

The causes of the panic attack are the physical symptoms of the fight and flight response. That response is questioning and fear. If the brain cannot locate an obvios solution or reason, it turns the problem inward and increases the sense of panic based onour own invention of an internal catastrophe.

The cause may be a history of pain and/or abuse. You ae correct that we try to figure it out and mostly just blame ourselves. So the solution may be to disconnect ourselves from these thoughts and feelings. I try to remember my values and how avoidance can steal the short time I have to experience life on this planet. I can't control my thoughts and feelings but I'm getting better at taking control of my arms, legs and mouth.
