Which oral medication is the best?

Hello everyone! So lately I've been going through the forums and found some really good treatments for hyperhidrosis. Unfortunately for me, I have it in the scalp area. When I get nervous in social events, that's when I usually break out sweating (Also I sweat heavily during exercise, maybe a little too much). I've wanted to create some sort of poll and get results from different people. So far the only medications I've come across with is:

Oxybutynin Hydrochloride (Ditropan)

Propantheline Bromide (Pro Banthine)

Glycopyrrolate (Robinul, Avert)

Propranolol (Beta Blockers)

I recently vistited my General Physician and she did not prescribe me with any of these medications, so I am going to visit the dermatologist to see if he would like to help me with my problem. Any feedback or help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks again everyone! :D

I've tried Glycopyrrolate and Propranolol. I have had some success with Glyco but Propranolol didn't do anything for me.

I've only used glyco, which works very well for me. Sometimes dry mouth, but no serious side effects. HH is SO individual that trial and error is all you can do. Good luck!!

So far, glycopyrrolate is the best answer, but I've heard quite a few success stories with oxybutynin. Also isn't propranolol used for hyperhidrosis that is related to stress or anxiety?

Hi there, I also sweat badly from my scalp to the extent my hair is always wet. I also sweat pretty much everywhere else and I do think oral is for the best.
Although I do know you can use odaban on your scalp but i havent got round to trying this.
Ive tried probanthine and propranolol, however proparanalol didnt work for me at all and ive just started taking it again but nothing. pro banthine worked really well for me for the first few months then lost its effectiveness.
I cant think of the names of the other beta blockers ive been on but none of them have worked.
Im actually going to the doctor to get referred to a dermo tomorrow since she wont give me avert or ditropan 'as they will mess with my heart too much' So gunna see if i can get a dermo to prescribe them.

Avert and Ditropan give you heart problems? Could you send me a link or reference of where you heard this from?

Glyco can affect blood pressure a bit. Since mine's a bit elevated, the pharmacist wouldn't give me the meds until my doctor approved. He did, and I've had no problems.

ive used both ditropan and glyco a lot, for me the ditro was a huge scary nitemare!! i had to pee every 15 minutes, had extreme dry mouth and blurry vision, felt completely disoriented and lost in the clouds, constipation, etc etc. now with glyco; it was much milder, i didnt have major dizziness or disorientation but i did still have heavy fatigue, and headaches and I had big bags under my eyes. id like to try probanthine since someone told me its much cheaper than glyco/avert? can anyone here say from experience that probanthine is as effective as glyco/avert? thanks

Tried propanolol just to exclude it really...Didn't do anything even as I took close to the max dose, kinda confirmed to me that the HH is not necessarily linked to anxiety, or at least not directly (maybe HH develops over time by overanxious nerves which permanently affects the nerve endings in the skin).

Also tried oxybutynin...It did work a little but also gave me some ddry mouth and worse, a weird feeling of drowsiness, like you're not completely 'there' but have your head in the clouds. The other reason I stopped using it was it worked more on my body than on my hands and feet. As I'm now doing iontophoresis for those it might make sense to try it again and see how the combination works but then again I really disliked that drowsiness.

I would have liked to try glyco, but it's not available in my country. Glyco should be better than oxybutynin because it doesn't pass the blood/brain barrier, hence you should still experience the dry mouth/constipation/etc you get from oxybutynin but not the drowsiness (and long term it may just be better for your brain anyway). As I don't think I would really start to use glyco every day though, I haven't bothered with it since the last doc I went to confirmed to me he wouldn't prescribe it to me (as an exception as the drug would have to be imported).

I know how you feel I only have to exert myself a little and I sweat profusely, also the medication I'm on just makes it worse ::(:

Finally, after viewing this site and doing some research, I visited a doctor. 35 years I have had HH. Mainly scalp - very bad but also chest and back. I am outside in the sun a lot. Saw a couple doctors (way back when) and was told, "don't worry about it. Sweating is good for you." But I am in a tropical climate now and everything is magnified. The doctor I saw was a generalist so I was skeptical. He prescribed Oxybutynini hydrochloridum (Driptrane) 2.5 mg tablets. Dosage was ½ tablet at night. It didn't seem to be helping much. Yesterday I took another ½ tablet in the morning and was dry. I didn't eat until noon. I took another ½ tablet at 5pm, waited until 7pm and went for a 3km walk. I always sweat profusely on these walks regardless of the weather. I was relatively dry. The doctor said to do the ½ tablets for 2 months and then we would make adjustment if needed but I couldn't wait. I am very very encouraged. My next experiment is to see if I can medicate only as needed. I haven't noticed any side effects and will visit the gym today. I always become soaked during a light workout. Those with HH know how debilitating it is so I am ecstatic. But on the other hand I am very depressed that I didn't do something 35 years ago. HH has drastically altered my life and that is very sad indeed. I think I have danced only 2 or 3 times over the years and have avoided so many events that most people take for granted. Good luck all. Keep searching. If anyone knows of any warnings or precautions i should be aware of from Oxybutynini hydrochloridum, please tell me. Thanks

Welcome Sweatbag! I'm in my 50's and lived with HH my entire life. It's great that you found some relief. Yes, HH had a severe affect in our past. But the past is just that... the past. HH affected my career choices and such, yet we still have tomorrow. Since you have found some relief get out there and experience whatever it is you feel you missed. Go enjoy now.

Thanks Sprawling. Are you on a medication that is working for you? Sounds like you have been seeking relief for a long time.. It's a very embarrassing malady. Tried to complain to the VA and they practically laughed me out of the place.
But, maybe I got lucky. Hope so.
I'm also mid 50's. Noticed sweating problem in 1978. It wasn't so bad at first because I was just out of the Army and was in good shape but over the years, gaining weight and getting older it got worse and worse. I was just in the desert of the middle east for 5 years (110°+) but there is almost no humidity so it was manageable. But now in Saigon and it's horrible. Very high humidity and hot.
All the best.
