What's the point...

...of the 'pointless' posts?

A good comment was made, why do we have 'counting to infinity', story threads and the like?

Do you like them or not, and why?
:)

To build a stronger sense of community among the members. So we are not just words on screen.

Are you annoyed they get more replies then the serious ones?

I like them as I find them fun, they provide lightness between serious posts, they allow me to say "I'm here" when I've nothing else to say, they can be a place for first-posters, they can be a small creative outlet :)

It is unfortunate that the importance of the thread and the number of replies seem to be inversely proportional. That is somewhat annoying. Nonetheless the trivial ones are not a complete waste of time.

On the point of pointless things, many products in advanced economies are pointless. Nail polish remover is pointless since nail polish itself is pointless. What is the point of painting your nails a different colour?

what constitutes "importance" and/or "trivial" is a matter of opinion

just having a place to express oneself without being judged can be very important to some people

Same point as make-up, fashion and colored hair: Self-decoration.
Exactly the same as decorating your house. Expressing yourself, making yourself feel good, surround yourself with things and colors that give you a feeling of well-being, creating an image that you like when you look at it, as looking at a painting - useless, pointless, but still worth it.

If we didn't have pointless things in life, I think it would get very heavy

This is a really good question which I have found some threads-pointless (sorry)

Though once I hear what these threads mean to someone else and understand how it helps I tend to have a different outlook.

I know I can struggle a bit in a crowd, but explaining my situation to those I'm with gives them also a different outlook.

I guess we listen with our heart before we comment:)

Spot on.

Why does everything in life have to qualify as having a point. If such threads are "pointless", then why do so many people reply?
They must serve a purpose to each person who bothers to post in them.:)

eeeeeeek!!! as a nail polish fanatic, i am thoroughly hurt by this comment!!! :D

haha, just kidding! but for reals, painting my nails has kind of turned into a hobby for me.. i paint them different every week, everyone knows i ALWAYS have my nails painted :) it keeps me from biting them, and they feel prettier than my otherwise crappy calcium deposited nails...

...hows that for a pointless post?? haha! i dig the 'pointless' threads, gives me just that much more reason to come here and see what everyones up to! : )

I'm not sure if its the sole purpose of pointless things - but they keep us busy. I'd rather be Google image searching numbers for the infinity game and thinking about which one to use than thinking (over and over) the same rubbish paranoid thought I've had in my head for the past 48 hours.

They serve well to enjoy and liberate the mind from the problems, an opportunity to make jokes and that sort of things, and not to associate this forum to only the bad things, I mean, if I go to an specific room to cry only, in time I will reject that room because it will be only a mirror of my worst problems, and go into it would be a sign of something going wrong. Which is not calming.

When you look at thing from a purely factual point of view, everything is essentially pointless. ;3

So I'm quite glad that we have pointless-fun threads as well as pointless-useful threads. :3

Even pointy things are pointless.
