Weird obsession with #9

Obsession with 9 and compulsive muscle clenching

I wouldn't exactly consider myself to have OCD.. Well, actually, I would, but in a very mild case. Nonetheless, I have a strange obsession with the number 9. It doesn't really effect me in my job or in normal life, it mostly just effects me in my head. When I say things, whether it's to myself in my head, or outloud to other people, I go out of my way (in my head) to make sentences add up to the number 9. Sometimes I will spell them out in my head, for example "how are you" is 9 letters, so it doesn't bother me because it's 9 letters, but if i were to say something like "i have a really nice gift to give you" that also wouldn't bother me because it's 9 words. it's not something that really takes over my life, it's just weird because i've done this in my head since i was little. i've always favored that number... anything over 9 is generally alright with me, i just kind of despise the number 8. any time i have 8 of anything i get kind of disturbed. the number 8 reminds me of the color purple and therefore i hate both. i also really don't mind the number 4, so if something adds up to 4 it doesn't bother me either. i don't know if this would be considered OCD or not?? it's not that extreme, it's just something that I spend all day everyday doing in my head (trying to find ways to make things equal 9), but it's not so bad that it's out of control. (for example, if I say something that only adds up to 8 letters or words, it doesn't bother me long term, it just kind of makes me slightly upset. I count to 9 probably 500 times a day, I don't know why, and also, I ALWAYS use my fingers when counting words, letters, or just to 9 in general. Does anyone understand this??

and the other part of the title, I also have a severe obsession with clenching my muscles, not much to say about it, but it's almost like I think having turrets would be, I can try to prevent myself from clenching random muscles in my body (which ever feel right at the moment) but there's no way to stop myself! I almost feel like I would go crazy if I was ever fully prevented from doing it.

i guess is not so bad at all : )

never heard, sounds quite awesome although! : ) u are some math genius and u don't know : P if it doesn't affect your normal life is not like u hurt someone. try to speak with some healthy specialist, maybe as some more logical answer for this situation.

It sort of sounds like it *is* taking over your life or affecting your life, because you are constantly thinking of the number 9 and trying to make your words/sentences add up to 9. There are other numbers that are safe and okay when you say them.

Have you tried talking to someone about it? I know it seems normal and not a big deal because you've done it for so long, but you don't have to live a life where you are constantly counting your words.

^ Agree with missbuzz

It does sound like OCD but you're right not to despair, lots of options. I think the first bit is to talk to someone.

You might be interested in learning about numerology. Number 9 in numerology can mean- Endings, completion, humanitarian, compassionate, romantic, selfless, generous, philanthropic, loving, wisdom, idealist, artistic, spiritual healer, all allowing, other worldly, blending.

You can calculate your name into number's using a numerology site and also your birth date. You might have a life path 9 or destiny number 9.

I have ocd but I also believe in numerology.

I'm sorry, I had to do this ::p:. I kinda had the same thing with the number 7, but it only lasted till I was 13 or so. This was 9 years ago, so I kinda forgot what I used to think or do. I do remember I always used to add up the numbers on my digital alarm clock when I went to bed and was happy when it turned out to be 7 :)

I had many obsessions when I was younger, and they didn't last long, seeming to go away on their own when my mind switched gears.

As long as it's not with the number 23, it should be alright.

I guess you have seen the movie "The Number 23", and I agree, the number 23 is alarming xP

Personally I like the number 9, but it seems like you have a mildly case of OCD, but I'm not a doctor or anything. And for me, 8 is a magic number and the colour purple is for me, the colour of magic.

FYI: 12 is a much better number. Tis my favourite of all the numbers. I should know, I've counted them all. I'll admit, 156333 is alright, and 90000023347782.7 certainly gave me a chuckle when I got to it, but 12 is just the best.

Hi badlydrawngirl,

I did a search for "obsession with number 9" on Google, and when I read what you wrote, you've basically written "exactly" what I go through (except for the hate purple thing, counting with fingers and clinching thing). No other Google result matches the symptoms you and I have so i'm really interested in finding out what you have learned about this wierd obsession. (I just joined this website for this purpose).

I've not really done any research other than today as it was something I didn't feel the need to address (I still don't it was just a curiosity thing), I just find it very interesting that there is someone out there who has the same obsession, and I'm interested in finding out what you have learned from posting it on the internet. Are you still an active member of this forum?

Regards,

It does sound like OCD, but maybe just a mild case of it. I used to be fascinated with slight asymmetry, which is in interesting contrast with the classic symmetry obsession. About the time I turned 30, a lot of this stuff died down in me. I think a combination of factors helped it to go away. Removing stressors from your life might help, but sometimes one really needs stressors. You can't challenge yourself without stressing yourself at least a little.

At the risk of sounding slightly stalker-ish, can anyone recommend how I can get in touch with badlydrawngirl..? I doubt she's active on this forum as she hasn't posted in about 2 years.

Know whats weird? Ever since I was a kid I always considered 9 to be my lucky number, and I actually clench my muscles to some degree as well

I also recall the muscle clenching, but I haven't done that in years. Ultimately, this has to do with stress. There is a stressor in your life.

Sorry to say but you're out of luck. She hasn't been active in 2 years so I doubt that she'll log back in. Anonymity on the Internet is great but can also lead to such frustrating occasions.

Tell me about it! I tried even searching for the username on google briefly to see if she's on any other websites, found a few results but going to need to put in some effort to locate the right user.. Sigh. Guess it is what it is.
