It has been six sessions since I've spoken to my counselor. the service is free as my college provides it. i have been scared many times by expensive charges for therapy that It is difficult for me to swallow these charges. in terms of what I learned from this experience, it takes me six sessions to truly establish a familiarity with my counselor. perhaps some more to become completely familiar. the awkward silences can be awkward. at first, i was tempted to ask for more therapy time, but i quickly learned that too much talk therapy led to my burnout. once a week at one hour intervals is the sweet spot so that i have enough to talk about without having awkward silences. towards the end of the hour, i get the urge to get fresh air as i've been sitting for an hour. i noticed that therapists don't talk much. they must listen first. it can get a bit awkward sitting and revealing embarrassing or painful information to them at first. i actually used coffee to get me high enough to spill the beans. it can be annoying sometimes when therapists don't agree with what you say, but it is nice to at least feel completely safe in their presence. they are specifically trained to help you whereas family members and friends may make things worse by being unempathic.
