lately ive been trying to be more social, and i dont know if it;s me or what, but it seems like people are being more critical of me or im more sensitive.

for example, i offered to do make-up for my friend and they said no, so of course, i got my feelings hurt. i work from home and havent heard from my boss in a while, so i email him to see whats up and he says he has been busy and might have more work for me, but is trying to expand his portfolio and is trying out other people's styles (i do graphic design).

i feel like this is happening a lot and its really making me just want to close off. any advice?

I must agree. While there are good people out there, you will likely encounter many more people you wish you'd never met. The world has become such a cold, ugly place. I mean I saw on Youtube just today a video of young guys getting coffee from a drive-thru at a restaurant and then as a joke they threw it on the person who served it to them and sped off laughing. I don't think that little game went on 20 years ago.

But that's besides the point I guess. I think we all have to have a little faith in people but just be careful. Many of us on this forum fear making fools of oursevles and there are a lot of people out there who pick up on that and will try to help us right along with doing it. You know, like the co-workers or classmates who constantly ask you why you're so quiet very loudly in front of others and grin at you knowing full well how uncomfortable they're making you. I know I'm not alone in experiencing this.

I also agree. When I wake up to a world with no more crime, law breaking or suffering, only then will I say people are good.

yea ppl suck and ppl can be so ignorant. I have been discriminated against because of my OCD...you know the so called normal ppl being scared of "crazy ppl" and all when they find out you have a mental illness. it doesn't matter if you are more compassionate or intelligent or more artistic then they are, they somehow think having OCD is something to look down on. how dare they? we are not criminals and speaking for myself, i've never hurt anyone and don't intend to. OCD isn't even that kind of metal illness.. it's unfair to be discriminated against and talked about constantly. It's not like the so called "normal" ppl are any less fucked in the head then ppl with mental illnesses. Married ppl who sleep around, women who gossip about nonsense day in and day out. racists who automatically look down minorities the list goes on and on. anyway I think im getting side tracked here lol rant rant rant i know  but i mean ppl, average ordinary ppl in 1st world countries are soooo fuked up, the most fuked up. but by the virtue of them being "normal" and average and being one of the herd, they feel as they have the right to ridicule and discriminate the "crazies".

People aren't bad... at least not the majority of them. Sure, there's a few dickbags here and there but they're usually pretty easily avoided. There's a lot you can do if you break down the walls of fear, I can tell you that much. Think outside the box.

Although this comment is a year old, I feel compelled to write a response.

It's not just "Americanized society" - every culture has ignorant stigmas and depending on which culture you live in, depends on what you view as ignorant. For example, many east-Asian cultures have a much more negative stigma about therapy than Western cultures (they're less likely to seek therapy than Westerners) because it's generally assumed that if you need a therapist, then something's wrong with you and you're crazy, which is untrue. Many normal, functioning people seek therapy to sort out a rough patch in their lives, it doesn't mean they're crazy. I'd go so far as to say developed Asian countries are as obsessed or possibly more obsessed than Americans when it comes to idol-worshipping celebrity figures and I don't think that comes from becoming Americanized.

Admittedly part of me is typing this based on a bias - I'm American and I get a little annoyed when other Americans are so quick to trash their own nation and its citizens with generalized, unsupported statements. Not that Skaterkid was doing this, necessarily (may have just been a comment based on personal experience and not a sweeping generalization), but it just reminded me of other comments that definitely DID fall under the category of the "blind anti-America trend" and I just had to say something.

Interesting thread though.

My psychologist says that when I believe that people are being overly critical of me, or I think that no one likes what I have done/said - that's probably my SA/AvPD talking. And it makes me unsure... Now I don't know how to distinguish what is real and what is paranoia. It's all lumped together - and it's confusing - so I figure it's safer just to trust my paranoia, because I'm probably right.

Yeah, hell - I'm not paranoid. I'm just realistic.

That's what I should except from people. Most of them are arrogant, self-righteous, judgemental and shallow. That would be the most realistic thing to assume.

i agree that people suck, but of course not everyone sucks. I think when you have SA there is a tendency to pick up more on negative things that people say or do and in general, to perceive everything a lot more negatively than would otherwise be the case.

People do suck, all of them, even me, even you. You have to learn not to take it personally when possible, and give them a break or you will always be mad. Every one does things sometimes that are not great for everyone. You should not close yourself off. That only hurts you.

Totally agree. Don't forget greedy, rude, unintelligent, hurtful...and so on. Human beings as a whole are just all-around horrible.
