I don't seem to get any notifications on any threads i am active on? Is this normal for this website?

Yes, it is - as of late January 2015. Or at least I assume that's the case, because that's the last time I got an email notification from this site regarding active thread replies.

I think i might have figured it out Graeme. You have to subscribe to the threads for notifications. The subscription button is at the top right of the thread. Anyways i'm going to try it and see if it works.
