Have you ever told anybody you had SA when they asked why your always quiet?

A few people have asked me why I never want to go out/why I never leave my house, etc... and I told them "I'm agoraphobic" but they tend to respond by saying: "Really? Well... why don't you just come out anyway?"

obviously the general public does not understand the first thing about how it feels to be agoraphobic.

I imagine that's kind of the same type of response someone with any social disorder would get? Either that-- or something much worse if the person wants to be completely rude.

I get a mixture of responses it's weird.
Some girl came up to me the other day and was like "Are you that quiet guy from the party?"
I just responded, quite cockily, "Is that supposed to be a compliment or something?" which wasn't particularly well received.
However when I told another girl I know I was shy she goes "Noooo don't be silly, are you joking?"

So I don't know. I must appear different each time I see different people..
Not sure I've answered your question there :p Just musing...

Nope, I haven't. On a couple of occasions, I have said I actually have few friends, or that my upbringing didn't exactly cultivate me to have good social skills, but that's about it. Generally, people that I have average contact with, say people I meet in the course of work (and I meet multiple people on a day to day basis), they never have any idea I am a loner in real life because I act normal, friendly, and even come across as chatty sometimes. When it comes to work, I have it right down to a pat, people I meet at work are all convinced I have this great social life outside of it. It amazing how some people can believe anything.

I've only told one person who isn't a member of my family, and that was a few days ago. it went so well, i thought it was going to be awful.

I've answered that question in various different ways. The closest I've said to the thread answer is "I have bad social skills."

Nope. Nobody knows, although they probably suspect. Of course, you total strangers on the net now know ;)

I wasn't sure what to answer. I knew that I should tell her about my SAD, but I felt stupid telling her that, and I thought she would think I was acting like a victim... so I just laughed and asked her: "Is that bad?":D

I like that reply. Think I'll use it myself. :)
Personally I never quite know how to answer the "why are you quiet" questions. I'm not sure if I usually manage more than a shrug and and uncomfortable half-smile or something.
