I skimmed through but no one pointed out that Africa is not a country. African Americans are not African, but they are Americans who have ancestry in Africa (and other regions). Charlize Theron is African due to the fact that's where she was born. I'm American since this is the place I was born.

Yea I think mental illness can effect anyone anywhere, but it is an interesting question specifically regarding SA, some cultures do put more value on character as appose to personality (Quiet, The Power of Introverts, Susan Cain) so that feeling of rejection, negative judgement ect isn't there, hence shyness is less likely to develop further into SA perhaps?

French of German descent. Where would your citizenship lie? That's how it works, from my understanding. If I'm wrong, correct me. Also, it may differ from place to place. I just know what happens here.

But no, not a lot of people know or recognize it as a continent made up of different countries with very distinctive people and cultures and such. You'd be surprised just how limited people's knowledge are when it comes to stuff like that. I'm not good at geography but I know small things and continue to learn.

Of course they do, but they are not treated or acknowledged. I can imagine refugees, victims of war, and famine would have major mental health problems. And they would have anxieties and depression just like us.

First of all: Hello everybody this is my first time here.
Secondly as a Nigerian it is quite offensive to generalize the continent of Africa, there are so many different cultures and ideology within just one African country that just saying "people in Africa" sounds ignorant.
And to answer your question, Yes people in Nigerian suffer from mental illness and social phobias just like you. We have psychiatrists and other mental health providers at our services just like you. I will say that most older Nigerians look at mental health as being caused by the afflicted themselves or as a curse for your past transgressions. Either way there is a stigma attached to people with social phobias, kind of like in the North Americas (see doesnt that sound funny!)
