ok..This year i turn 16 and i'm able to get my Learner's permit..however..i'm terrified at doing so..everyone else i know is excited that they have freedom and that they will be able to drive themselves places such as parties...which i'm not likely to do anyway..but i'm terrified about doing something wrong while driving..i'm scared of small things like being beeped or sworn at for doing something wrong..even if it's from complete strangers...is anyone else like this? :?

I was exactly like that.. I'm still like that now haha. I always look in my mirrors obsessively and like i'm afraid to go in the fast lane for some reason.. its like that lane brings pressure to drive a certain way or something. Anyway, long story short I have the same thoughts as you maybe more :)

Hi im 21 and i got my learners at 16 too. It was a sweat-a-thon going throught the driving test but i made it! ah ha! There are so many tests and stages to go though. I used to Be really anxious on the road too. afraid to go fast or too slow in case the people behind get annoyed. But now, it'll be a few weeks till i get my full license, what a relief, no more tests, and now i don't really care about other drivers. Before, i would be self conscious when there are cars coming towards me, its like they'll be staring at me through the windshield. But like i said, after a few years, it gets a lot better. Hope its the same for you. Everyone gets nervous when they start driving no matter SA or not, so ur not alone. As it is with everythin, practice more, especially when there's other cars on the street, so u get the hang of driving in the midst of traffic. Good luck! and by the way i got beeped and half swore at, but i came out fine. I remember the car nearly ran backwards into this car of hoons, and all i worried about was that they were annoyed with me ha!

I'm 30 and haven't driven in ten years haha. Somehow I got my driver's license my first try, at 16. My mom sort of knew the route from when my brother took the test so I could practice. I just barely passed anyway.

Anyhow I made mistakes driving when alone, caused some damage to the car. In the end I became too afraid I would kill someone-worse case scenario, or have to spend tons of money on insurance or car repairs. I have a problem I guess of visualizing where I am on the road and can't get out of tight spots. Parking crooked was my specialty ;) And I have a bit of a poor judgment. Add the natural tendencies of many drivers who are impatient and unforgiving... I just couldn't drive anymore. Sigh. My husband drives ok and even he gets stressed by tailgaters and speed demons.

Not being able to drive is just another way for me to be an outcast.

Drivings a scary thing with or without SA! But definitely think of the positive. Even though youd rather NOT drive on your own, doesnt knowing that you now CAN give you a feeling of freedom?

Anxiety is an emotion. People that have an anxiety disorder think of it more as a state of being, which in our reality it is in a way. But being excited about something and having anxiety about something can be much of the same thing! (Your heart beats faster, adreniline is released etc). It just how you look at the situation that determines whether youll have anxiety about it or not. (hopefully this makes sense to you)

You really have nothing to fear, practice and experience will come.
